Jeevas COWBOYS & INDIANS After watching Jeevas play a blinding set in Liverpool on their last tour I was looking forward to getting a new album from the chaps. When it dropped onto the mat today I whacked it into the player straight away. My review, however, comes several days and plays later. This is because the band’s debut album sat with me for a while before I really got into it, so I thought this one would too. I was right to wait… The band is now working as one whole unit, and not just a vehicle for one person. Musicianship is of the highest order and there are plenty of songs! All albums have songs - I’m sure that is what you are thinking - well not quite… The songs will stand the test of time, despite the fact that it could be argued they sound dated now. There are obvious points of reference here, whether it’s pure or imitation, from Have You Seen The Rain (Credence Clearwater Revival) to I Can’t Help Myself (George Harrison). One is pure homage, one is just a cover, both are equal in delivery and structure. Much could be said the same of Masters Of War which is about as serious as it gets, and follows How Much Do You Suck which is throwaway and fun. This is the strength of the record; it takes itself seriously when it needs to, and when it doesn’t it’s just fun rock ‘n’ roll. One of the record’s strongest points is that it’s great to listen to in the car, and matches the listening habits of the 24-35 age group this record targets. But the biggest plus is the songs, and radio is about just that in 2003 - perhaps the likes of 6 Music etc. will take this record on board… Overall it’s a strong second album from the band and I look forward to hearing these songs in a live arena.
