Record Reviews Beans On Toast WILD GOOSE CHASERS. Bot Music “These songs are about trading modern society for a wilder, more feral existence. Songs that dig deep into the meaning of life and our purpose on earth. They provide an exit strategy from a boring dystopia by gambling flood for a fairy tale. This might sound pompous, but such is life, and such is the wild goose chase.” ‘Faith In The Moon’ Lyric “Don’t forget to stare out to the star, don’t worry about the big things while the little things fall apart, don’t forget about the feeling of the ground beneath your toes and don’t forget the things that deep down inside you’ve always known,…” Recorded under a full “flower moon” at the Albion Rooms in Margate, these 12 songs are all accompanies by Matt Millership on an ancient piano. There are no other instruments. its simply piano and voice. The record opens with a melodic and quasi-classical extended introduction by that ‘ancient piano’ in ‘Away With Words’ before the gravely vocal by BOT proceeds to communicate a set of aesthetic, simple and clearly stated lyrics in ‘Faith In The Moon’. It’s a prime example of the artist’s lyrical integrity and character: “Show me life, show me distance, show me time, show my patience, show me the path to follow that leads me to the truth, show me the reason for our existence…” Simple and very effective words that could appear in any guide to healthy and meaningful living. The duopoly of stripped-down accompaniament (by that ‘ancient piano’) and the artist’s gravely, homespun vocal lends beauty and honesty to this powerful opening statement. The piano take centre stage in ‘The Midas Touch’ with the opening spell of honky-tonk, upbeat notes before that distinctive vocal returns with observations on (the UK apedemic of) obsessive gambling. It’s serious and fun at the same time. ‘Variety’ offers a more sober, wistful but tuneful vision while ‘Boring Dystopia’ offers up a more jazzy rendition with a mammoth melody and a spell of meaningful rap. WILD GOOSE CHASERS is a refreshing slice of popular music art. The recording is high on clarity with a live ambience reflective of the record’s recording venue. While the market is dominated by the likes of Swift and Lupa, Jay McAllister (Beans On Toast) offers an alternative, real vision of life and a simple and very effective and entertaining way of communicating it. Every song hits the mark musically and lyrically. https://youtu.be/UoENZhgd8YQ 4/5 2025 Tour March 12 LIVERPOOL The Cavern Club Page: 1 2 |
