Deathretro DEATHRETRO. Cosmic Glue

Deathretro: Kie (Vox & Synth), Adrian (Guitar), Boone (Bass and Vox) and Grant (Drums & production).

Deathretro is  three friends from the villages of Cumbria who forged a sound alive with the drama of their local sprawling hillsides and the vibe of the local free party scene. Now based in Manchester they are joined by drummer and producer Grant Henderson as they gear up for taking the sound and energy of the debut album onto the stage.

Review

Louder Than War praised: “It could be argued that Deathretro are the country’s best kept musical secret.”

Opening track ‘Black Lights’ literally explodes out of the player with a huge rhythm in heavy rock mode, albeit with truckloads of melody and a vibe that could dominate alternative dance floors. ‘Waveshifter’ is more adventurous with its distant vocal and thundering snare drum, while guitar riffs wander in and out. The pace is frantic as it chases another superb melody. Hell, I’m impressed.

‘Edge Of Nothing’ offers some sonic respite with its slower pace and easier tone. That said it’s a darker vibe with a pleading vocal that hits home, hard. ‘Six Days’ is a jagged, mocking track while ‘(Cycles_1)’ is a highly attractive rock instrumental followed immediately by ‘(Cycles_2)’ which repeats the dose albeit with some highly effective electronic additions. ‘Sound Of Sirens’ opens with an extended instrumental intro followed by a spell of talking vocals and the thrash of guitars. It’s hell on earth and my favourite track here - one of the rock songs of 2021.

‘Electric Rooms’ is another favourite with adventurous changes of pace and mood, again with compelling talking vocals. It’s another favourite. ‘Blind Panic’ has a stuttered vibe with a deathly rhythm married to striking guitar riffs, and more talking vocals. This record just keeps getting better! Finally, ‘Pistols’ concludes what has to be one of the best rock albums of the year. There’s adventure, originally and distinction in these grooves, and I can’t wait to witness a live performance.
