Liverpool Sound City The Music Oh No Ono, a Danish quintet faired somewhat better with their distinctive brand of pop psychedelia, however, this was a big sound which needed a somewhat bigger venue… The shows at the Kazimier are running very late so I stroll over to the Zanzibar to catch another band whose current album impressed greatly. The Jim Jones Revue are old-skool blues-rockers from London, and on arriving at the venue found them in full flow with punters hippy-shakin’ their socks off. Jim J, the voice, was really belting songs out against a backdrop of clattering (real) piano, pounding drums and rampaging guitars. It was a show-and-a-half and I could well understand why this band is so admired by their peers. Great stuff! Then, back to the Kazimier to watch my heroes, The Archie Bronson Outfit, whose album DERDANG, DERDANG, we’ve played to death on our radio shows. But, once again, the sound was hitched up far too loud for this small venue. The band has just released a new album and started the set with songs from it, followed by (my) favourites from the last album including ‘Kink’, ‘Cherry Lips’ and ‘Dart For My Sweetheart.’ It was a slightly disappointing that sound quality was not what it should have been but, ultimately, I couldn’t have wished for a better ending to day 1. |
