The Middle East Crisis More than 3,500 people were killed in the conflict, of whom 52% were civilians, 32% were members of the British security forces, and 16% were members of paramilitary groups. Republican paramilitaries were responsible for some 60% of the deaths, loyalists 30%, and security forces 10%. Loyalists were responsible for 48% of the civilian casualties, republicans 39%, and the security forces 10%. The Northern Ireland peace process led to paramilitary ceasefires and talks between the main political parties, which resulted in the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. This Agreement restored self-government to Northern Ireland on the basis of “power-sharing” and it included acceptance of the principle of consent, commitment to civil and political rights, parity of esteem, police reform, paramilitary disarmament and early release of paramilitary prisoners. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Troubles The Comparison It was the partition of Palestine to create the State of Israel in 1948 when the property and homes of many Palestinians were taken by Israelis that started the conflict. Even today illegal Israeli settlers on The West Bank are terrorising Palestinian residents, destroying homes and taking land. This is a conflict partially between essentially Muslims and Jews. In addition, donations from American citizens and companies to Northern Ireland’s Republican/Catholic fighters helped acquire arms and ammunition. Israel’s dominant armed and intelligence strength is due to America’s historic and continued funding and supply of the world’s most sophisticated weapons, missiles and bombs, which are now being used in Palestine and Lebanon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_Palestine Double Standards It is the case that Israel has been heavily defended in its actions by the USA and other nations including the UK. For example, there has been no serious criticism of Israel assassinating opposition leaders in Iran and Lebanon, while Iran is heavily criticised for responding by attacking Israel. There has been no criticism of Israel in their indiscriminate exploding of pagers and phones in Lebanon that killed hundreds and injured thousands. There has been little direct criticism of Israel in its ‘precision’ bombing that’s killed over 42,000 Palestinians including 15,000 children - which continues today. There has been little criticism of Israel in it ignoring many United Nations resolutions. There has been no criticism of the Israel’s detention without trial of over 1,200 Palestinians from the West Bank (and the torture of many) while the taking of Israeli hostages is (rightfully) heavily condemned. |
