SHIT FLOATS Abdel Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt was installed following the revolution that evicted the former autocratic leader, democratically elected a Muslim president who was then removed. This president has returned to the former dictatorial ways with even journalists jailed for no reason and without any trial. His record on human rights is so poor that another revolt could be forthcoming although he has build formidable army and police support.
Narendra Modi of India may not be the worst, most autocratic leader but by favouring his own Hindu religion in legislating and presiding over ever-increasing inequality his position may be in jeopardy in the world’s largest democracy. I wonder how the country will deal with another Coronavirus surge in circumstances where Modi frowns on lockdowns and people gather in ever increasing numbers, and in a country where investment in health services for all is criminally lacking…
Kim Jong-un of North Korea even murdered his own uncle, and of course is another Trump ‘friend’. Kim is in the top echelon of dictators kept in power by fear, senior official support and control of all media. He presides over abject poverty and starvation while building his country’s weapons-of-mass-destruction arsenal. Even China, who has sponsored the country, is starting to worry.
Viktor Orban of Hungary
Eastern Europe is building its own clique of autocratic leaders by democratic election, carried to victory by the older generation. Here’s a few of them:
Jarosław Kaczyński of Poland
Andrej Babis of Czechoslovakia
Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev of Azerbaijan
These autocratic democratically elected leaders have risen to power through nationalism, and a populism which preaches hate and racism for immigrants, while constructing legislation that is both regressive and, where nationally relevant, is contrary to European Union human rights.
