The Enemy: Music For The People!
THE ENEMY… Return with the release of bold new album ‘Music For The People’ album which was preceded by single ‘No Time For Tears’ Want a proper rock ‘n’ roll record with a distinctive edge? Well, here you go… Opening track ‘Elephant Song’ is a monster with long dark electronic entry passage, complete with thunder thuds, opening out eventually into daylight with sharp guitar riffs, solid bass rhythm and distant vocals. A brilliant curtain-raiser. ‘No Time For Tears’ with it’s twinkling piano notes is next up. It’s the prelude epic rock single to the album and a natural choice with its strong melody and brilliant instrumental backdrop. ’51st State’ exemplifies the band’s polemical nature with its biting lyrics backed by a more traditional heavy rock/punk vibe. But this band recognises a good chorus when it sees one and this is an excellent example. ‘Sing When You’re In Love’ is the second single with its simple, powerful lyrics, another powerhouse melody, cleaner sound and slower pace. ‘Last Goodbye’ is an acoustic beauty with lyrics and vocal delivery that can’t fail to move you. I feel a third single coming on… ‘Nation Of Checkout Girls’ is social commentary, pure and simple and an aspect of this band’s music that I admire. This song is beautifully judged in its sonic clarity and production which renders it so accessible. Message received and understood. ‘Be Somebody’ continues the social commentary in rushed, rough-hewn punk style. Not the strongest song here but melody, pounding keyboard notes and an expressive vocal ensures that the song is better than most other British bands can conjure up. ‘Don’t Break The Red Tape’ is an aggressive declaration of intent delivered in punk-pop style with swinging guitar riffs and vocals beautifully matched to message. ‘Keep Losing’ is another moving acoustic song with strings making an entry to add depth and drama to a great song. Lyrically, it’s faultless while the melody makes this song a no-brainer as another single. Brilliant. ‘Silver Spoon’ concludes the album with a song that is dominated by strong vocal harmonies and winding instrumentals which gives it that original and distinctive edge. It’s epic in scale and a thoughtful end to a great album. This record has just about everything you want in a rock record including diverse pace and sounds. But, most importantly it’s overflowing with intelligent, meaningful messages - a young band speaking its mind through rock music. This is an even better second album from the band, and after watchng them live in Liverpool performing some of these songs live i can confirm that this album is a potential global hit and essential listening. 4/5 |
