The Wishing Tree: OSTARA (e.a.r music) The Wishing Tree is Steve Rothery, guitarist from Marillion and vocalist Hannah Stobart. On drums is Paul Craddick, Hannah’s other half. It was way back in 1996 that Rothery fulfilled his ambition to record an acoustic album with a female vocalist. That album’s name is CARNIVAL OF SOULS and has something of a cult following. OSTARA is released on the 7th September and for those who enjoy contemporary, ethereal folk music, and have difficulty in finding anything new to buy, this is for you. The album’s title track opens proceedings and it’s certainly the case of ‘best-dressed…’ It’s the best song here and sonically typical of what’s on offer. It’s a haunting song with a strong melody, wandering ambience, lovely instrumental arrangement and a prime example of Hannah Stobart’s quite beautiful voice. There’s a dark underbelly provided by Craddick’s threatening drum rhythm, while the song is punctuated with some soaring riffs from Rothery. It’s an excellent track that builds to epic proportions. ‘Easy’ is a more contemplative, restrained song with some enchanting backing vocals (also provided by Stobart). ‘Hollow Hills’ opens with tumbling guitar notes and is underpinned by a strong melody, Stobart’s thoughtful vocal and well-judged production. There’s a strong blues guitar intro to next track ‘Seventh Sign’ that continues to play with less aggression under another lovely Stobart vocal. It’s another album highlight.’Falling’ has an altogether lighter ambience with its twinking keyboard notes, light rhythmic touch and matching vocal. ‘Kingfisher’ repeats the dose while final track ‘Soldier’ houses some of the most moving guitar and vocal passages. I listened to this album several times before attempting a review. Each time I listened I understood and liked a little more. Initially I felt that some of the songs sound very similar, but after a few plays I discovered the most subtle (and welcome) diversity. There’s musical integrity by the truckload and the feeling that this album is a creation of love rather than for any commercial gratification. Recommended. 3.5/5
