The R.G. Morrison Farewell, My Lovely The R.G. Morrison - FAREWELL, MY LOVELY (Loose Music) Essentially, Rupert Graeme Morrison and his band of merry men, following up 2006’s debut album “Learning About Loathing” and pretty much a similar formula adopted now as then. That formula is a set of stripped down folk-based songs, with a rawness in execution facilitated by it having been recorded on analogue equipment, but it fits the bill. There are a number of glimpses towards an Americana leaning, something that Loose Music have a penchant for. This amalgam produces an earthy feeling, which comes in the form of a predominantly acoustic musical backcloth, allowing Morrison’s vocals to dominate. That’s a positive, for he has a sorrowful style which harmonises well with the surrounding hollowness and provides a suitably melancholic atmosphere. That does lead to a degree of monotony it has to be said, but something that the band has clearly recognised, as they shoehorn in some dramatic angst ridden guitar interjections. These feel somehow inappropriate at first, but do serve to take things to a welcome new dimension. With indie folk currently riding the crest of a wave on the back of Mumford & Sons as protagonists, there are a few worthy contributors gaining some additional attention and The R.G. Morrison merit inclusion therein. 3/5 TC
