Scouting For Girls New LP Scouting For Girls - EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE ON TV (Epic Records) Scouting For Girls aren’t dead ‘cause I heard them on the radio! 2007’s debut trod that awkward line between pop and punk, with a clear invitation to step towards the riches offered up by the former. The decision for album number two then was whether to move towards credibility or to grab the cash by pampering to an audience with pocket money to spend. I guess the decision wasn’t a tough one was it?! So what we have here is another set of superficial tales about love and sex, with some bouncy singalong melodies to entrap that target audience. The tunes are standard and unadventurous and the lyrics nothing short of banal - “Posh girls have good manners but they go like the clappers” which, to be fair, could quite easily sit on a Fratellis or Courteeners album couldn’t it?! So having carefully set their stall out, the London trio are sat firmly in sector ‘boy band’, but they do write their own material and can play rudimentarily on their instruments, which surely places them one step ahead of the rest of that particular fodder. In an age where X-Factor manufactured ‘talent’ can scoop up an unjust proportion of the pocket money available, Scouting For Girls do enough to merit their slice of that pie. Then when their fans have all grown up, Domino’s Pizza should have risen out of the recession and will be recruiting again! www.myspace.com/scoutingforgirls TC
