Thomas’s previous albums have disappointed with their lack of a definable direction and scant melodies. But this one is very different, and hugely better.

Thomas has a very fine voice and writes the most wonderful lyrics. To this now I can add beautiful music. The opening track Since You’ve Been Around exemplifies this new, more confidant Thomas, and to say that she is now up there in Joni Mitchell class territory is no overstatement. There’s a new fragility, moving introspection and a voice that convinces utterly and completely. Pretty Dress follows with another superb melody and a voice that travels the scale with rare levels of expression. One is compelled to listen. Then comes the bass-driven and glacial Loose Ends with drums beating out a steady rhythm gently layered by Hammond notes, and wandering guitar. One word - glorious. Next up is the beautiful It Don’t Matter To The Sun with only a Hammond lending support. It has a gospel vibe as it moves emotionally along like a gently rolling river. Then piano notes and strings unfold in another emotionally charged song, Guess It May. It’s a compelling love song expressing doubt and questions, albeit with an optimistic undercurrent of hope.
IF SONGS COULD BE HELD is one of the most beautiful albums I have heard this year. For fans of female singer/songwriters it represents essential listening, while for us it will certainly figure strongly in our list of ‘Best Albums of 2005.’
