No Line On The Horizon: U2 ![]() Question: Can & Why Would u2 Save The Music Industry?
There was a really intresting piece in the Independent newspaper where Andy Gill asked the question ‘Can u2 save the music industry? It was an intelligent piece which you can read an extract from on the next page! But after reading it I started to ask ‘Why the fuck would they want to?’ U2 come from an age of excess, the born out of the drug fuelled, stadium filling punk rock rawness of the 70’s and coming to promise in the headonistic eighties,re-inventing themselves in the excessive nineties to remain at the top of the stadium filling list themselves here in the 21st century. They have sold the millions of LP’s (both when they were vinyl and then CD) they have embraced the download generation by having their own fucking i-pod, So this is a band that has made a record company millions of pounds, yes they did ok themselves out of it, but now they are in a position to take what they do to a completely different place and actually not save the music industry but become a major player in it themselves (You can argue that they have been for years allready)
The music industry will continue to fuck itself up the arse with or without (no pun intended) U2, The suits and ties will continue to speak about ‘the bottom line’ in an indusrty where that ‘bottom line’ is simply ‘Is the fucking record any good? And can they deliver it live?’ NOT how many it will sell and if they can pay their mortgage on the back of it, the industry has shifted 360 degrees allrerady, those on the inside throwing stones are simply breaking their own glass.
So the obvious answer to the question is a resounding NO, U2 will not only NOT save the music industry it will form part of it’s re-invention as a global force which is defined by the strength of the music contaigned within the shiny disc (or downloaded to the computer) and then delivered in front of an audience, the industry is metamorphing into what it should have become in the 70’s, So fuck the music industry, do it yourself, be part of the machine, but stand alone away from those who run it, Get Yer Boots On!
