Amazing Baby REWILD Review

amazingb

It’s still only June 09 and I have to pinch myself to ensure that this torrent of great and diverse albums is not a figment of my (very active) imagination. Yup, I can’t thinkof a better year in the last ten for the quality of releases. In recent weeks I’ve also noticed that grand gesture, psychedelic pop-rock music has chosen ‘09 to make a magnificent return. Amazing Baby is a new Brooklyn based five-piece whose debut album fits loosely into this  generic category, although with twists and turns that will hook you…

Opener ‘Bayonets’ fairly explodes out of my speakers with its initial guitar rush. It  quickly settles down to a more even sound and vibe unsettled only by its Wurlitzer-led choruses. Truckloads of melody and marginal nods to Arcade Fire complete a grand album introduction. ‘Invisible Place’ has a dark, dense and compelling instrumental opening which eventually eases off to allow the lead vocalist to take over in slow, contemplative style. The choruses take it back up big-time before it eases back again. I now know why this band has the word ‘amazing’ in its moniker… The final passage remonds me of the Beatles as it takes its long curtain call. ‘Karkra’ is hurried along by a rampant drum rhythm with superb vocal harmonies never too far away. In the background a most massive ocean-deep drum eventually begins to make its presence felt that adds to the Spectre-esque ambience. ‘Headdress’ is less dramatic and slower with winding guitar riffs and piano notes making telling appearances.

So far it’s been a rollercoaster ride which I didn’t think could get much better. But then ‘Dead Light’ makes its mystical entrance. The sound is actually simpler, the pace more calculating and thoughtful, the vocal takes centre stage, guitars and vocal harmonies remain at a safe distance. It’s a beauty! ‘Deerriper’ changes up to sixth gear and whistles rockily along, while ‘Old Tricks In Hell’ drops down a gear with that Wurlitzer returning for a second and successful innings. ‘The Narwhal’ opens with an amazingly different vocal chorus. There’s a strong traditional folk vibe which includes wonderful acoustic guitar passages. The melody is superb and the whole ambience created is unique and compelling.

Amazing Baby has created a sound which is distinctive and original. Every song stands out but there are at least three that are awesome in their beauty and originality. This is one special album that deserves your attention, and after a couple of plays will win you over, utterly and completely.

4.5/5
