The Enemy: 02 Academy Liverpool 2009

en8

As caustic Coventry trio The Enemy took to the stage while a train station departure-style board spiralled through place names from all over the UK, their manifesto was now so clear. The three-piece want to be, exactly what Britain has been missing since Oasis’ lead man Noel Gallagher strayed the wrong side of 40; a group with youth on its side who appeal to the everyman in every town.

Their debut LP and yet another call for unity. WE’LL LIVE AND DIE IN THESE TOWNS shot straight to number one on the back of a plethora of rip-roaring singles and the Liverpool crowd seem to have adopted them as one of their own too. Last night it was easy to see why, powered on by a depressingly youthful looking rhythm section of Liam Watts (drums) and Andy Hopkins (bass), Clarke is a natural rabble-rouser he implored the audience to join sing-a-longs for swaggering singles ‘Away From Here’ and ‘Had Enough.’

en7

It’s not just the band’s ‘live every moment’ mentality that garners mass appeal though… Lyrical snipes at the fallout caused by industrial decline on tracks like ‘It’s Not Ok’ and ‘You’re Not Alone’ have also struck chords too, and there’s no doubt Clarke has that innate ear for a melody which has seen him favourably compared to Gallagher and Paul Weller.

The band play their brand new cut ‘No Time For Tears’ and it’s just simply show-stopping and it becomes evident that they are destined to become one of the biggest bands this country has produced, but more importantly, one of the best…

en9

This was a stunning night out that was just awesome from the moment we stepped into the venue until the moment we left. I got up this morning just wanting to do it all over again, NOW that’s the sign of a great rock ‘n’ roll show… Don’t you fuckin’ forget it….
