The Temper Trap: Conditions

‘CONDITIONS’

The Debut Album, August 10th 2009

Epic Melbourne four piece, The Temper Trap release their debut album ‘Conditions’ on August 10th on Infectious Records.

Since the band’s contagious track ‘Sweet Disposition’ began its word of mouth ascent late last year they have been featured in the BBC Sound of 2009 poll and countless tips for 2009.   Early shows in the UK quickly sold out and have explained the reason for such breathless reactions as NME proclaiming“this band are destined for major things’” and Q citing them as one of the top acts to see at Glastonbury.

‘Conditions’ features ‘Sweet Disposition’ alongside debut UK single, ‘Science Of Fear’, a track that saw The Guardian “mightily impressed” and The Fly declare the band “set to soundtrack the summer”. Such attention could see a young band crumble but The Temper Trap are made of sterner stuff and have delivered a thrilling, joyful and utterly compelling album. Recorded with Jim Abbis  in Melbourne  last year and completed in London in the spring ‘Conditions’ is a remarkable debut album from a remarkable band.

The Temper Trap’s beginning is a somewhat typical band story with a twist…young kids working in a clothes shop in Melbourne come together;  bonding initially by way of sharing shifts and being forced to work together and find out what each other likes outside their rent money.  The soon to be band form a kinship over music (although all of them have completely different musical tastes from indie to metal to drum n bass to low-fi).  Eventually Dougy asked Toby (drummer) to come back to his place on the outskirts of Melbourne to play him some songs.

Toby is succumbed by the songs and even more so Dougy’s voice and they’re in motion.  Jonny, the son of one of the world’s leading modern missionaries had taken Dougy under his wing when at the tender of 17 Dougy took on the monumental task of moving to Australia having spent most of his life living with his family in Indonesia and Hawaii.  Dougy asked Jonny to learn bass and he is suddenly moving to a new beat. The very gifted Lorenzo, a school friend of Toby’s later joins on guitar and they are away  starting the slow grind, tirelessly honing their sound throughout 2006 and 2007.

While the history of the band might seem short lived they’ve been a group since that period and have chipped away, off the radar in Australia, keeping a low profile while they develop what is now an epic sound that is truly looks set to take the world by storm

The story runs deeper, and has many layers, but for now, it’s about the music.
