The Blueskies Souvenir
‘Primal Depeche meets The Killers in a dark alley with stories of loves lost and many strange friends’ – Q Magazine Brighton-based electro quintet The Blueskies will release their debut mini-album ‘Souvenir’ this May 30th. Formed in late 2006 by a shared love of geeking out over synths, and delving into the, often seen as shameful, world of mainstream pop, the result is a record fuelled by a passion for writing infectious melodies and making people dance. To date, the band have appeared live with the likes of Does It Offend You, Yeah?, Ladyhawke and The Presets, and Souvenir’s production duties were taken care of by producer-of-the-moment Paul Savage (Franz Ferdinand, Mogwai, The Gossip), winner of this year’s Music Producer’s Guild Award for Breakthrough Producer. The record’s opener, the tale of a not-so-chivalrous character ‘Matthew’ demonstrates the band’s tidy knack at making the synth work side by side with the guitars rather than fighting with them for interest. What follows is the instantly catchy and painfully all too familiar lament of ‘Hen Nights and Homeless’ ‘I hate this side of town/ where the plastic tiaras dance to the sound of drowning sorrows/ while the hen nights and homeless fight for attention.’ As the record wraps up with the poignant ‘Thanks For Asking Why’ and the absolutely storming synth party stomp of ‘Royal Blood’, it’s clear that this mini-album means the start of something special for the band as they announce a string of tour dates later in the year. The Blueskies have also contributed several remixes for artists as diverse as Frank Turner, The Xcerts and All Time Low. Souvenir is released through Killing Moon, the label that brought us debuts from artists such as Little Death and The Muscle Club.
