Photo Highlights of 2009 BB King After many years capturing live images I shouldn’t be nervous. But on this occasion I was worried about not capturing strong images of blues legend BB King. I just knew it would be my one and only opportunity to graphically document a performance by a musician well into his 80’s, and unlikely to return to the UK anytime soon. After a brilliant jazz recital by his band the King walked slowly onto the stage, waved briefly, and then sat on the chair he would occupy for the whole show. One band member arranged his mic, while the other carefully handed over King’s 12 string, Lucille. As soon as he had his hands on Lucille, a look of ecstasy crossed his face… King’s performance was regularly punctuated by remiscenses which often included stories of his past lovers. The above image was taken during one of his talks, when he was at his most mischevious. One of my favorourite images of 2009 is the simplest, and it’s this one of King’s horn player. Love it!
