It’s La La Land Folks! The UK has performed quite well since the decision to leave, contrary to the short-term predictions by senior Conservatives who thankfully have left the nest (it seems for a more profitable future). However, unlike most other EU countries, the UK’s economic growth is largely reliant on massive, unsustainable personal and governmental borrowing. The only other country that follows the UK’s extreme debt burden strategy is our ’special relation’, the USA. It is this that has kept the UK’s head above water immediately post-Brexit vote but it cannot last. Already the signs are looking ominous as people reduce spending while prices rise (due to the falling value of Stirling), and inward investment declines. And the UK is still a member of the EU! Last year’s USA presidential election was a farce - a dishonest and dishonourable farce. Trump made claims about his opponent that surely should have been stopped. I can still hear the dreadful taunts - “Lock her Up!”. In essence, Clinton offered hope to the dispossessed and out-of-work but her messages were drowned out by Trump’s tweets and false claims. It amazes me that Trump’s allies cannot see the wood from the trees while offering excuses for his declarations and behaviour. They live in a La La Land that inevitably must crumble. The signs are already visible, La La Land should not be awarded the ultimate Oscar accolade but at least it’s entertaining. The other La La Land examples I’ve outlined are far from entertaining and threaten our future and at a time when Putin’s actions are generating chaos, harm, death, the rise of intolerance and extreme right wing popularity. May, Trump and Putin - it’s scary and we’re walking into it like stationary rabbits caught in the headlights. ED Page: 1 2 |
