Electric Picnic: Ireland 2010

But moving on to more ethereal elements…

BODY & SOUL will be shape-shifting this year – pushing the ever-evolving village to fresh extremes: adding a new spark of energy, passion and raw talent into the creative, enchanted landscape that has become synonymous with the name. We feel its time to build a new stage to show off some of the exciting new talent rising to the surface. To help with this, we’ve enlisted one of our favourite artists aka SHRINE, to build a permanent installation from recycled materials, tin cans, bottle caps, and broken chandeliers….In keeping with Body&Soul tradition at Electric Picnic, the Body&Soul Village will be a haven inside the festival: a meandering, colourful wonderland of music stages, visual installations, massage tents, cosy cocoons, disco corners, great food, and as always…something that little bit different. Festival revelers can expect the unexpected – with a programme that focuses as much on showcasing up-and-coming talent as well as a line up of established homegrown and international artists with the usual sprinkling of surprise “special guests”. Our Resident DO LAB DJs from L.A will be firing up the party lights once again with their trademark explosive music alongside a theatrical extravaganza by their super sexy partners-in-crime Lucent Dossier. This year’s Zen Gardens and Earth Spirit will feature among their realms: 60 hand picked therapists, the hugely popular Panchammas Acoustic Tipi and Sauna, creative workshops, yoga theatre, permaculture, organic gardening, environmental art, herb lore &sound, shamanic journeys and pretty pockets of peace and harmony.

And for those who fancy something more cerebral…

MINDFIELD – Electric Picnic’s spoken word area was one of last year’s undisputed talking points, literally. From the hilarious news quiz hosted by a pin-striped and wellington-booted Jon Snow to a stunning poetry reading by Florence Welch on the Literary Stage to the highly charged debates about the economy hosted by David McWilliams, MindField announced its arrival as the forum for national conversation. Thousands of Picnickers checked out the hugely exciting and diverse programme of debates, talks, readings, theatre, science experiments, Irish language and slam poetry. This year’s programme will see even higher profile international speakers, writers and thinkers in conversation about everything from sport to architecture, music to economics, fashion to science. The Leviathan and Word stages return, as well as the Arts Council Literary Stage, Science Gallery, Puball Gaeilge and Theatre Stage. Expect favourites and regulars as well as some very exciting new additions, details of which will be announced during the Dublin MindField festival at POD over the May bank holiday weekend. See www.mindfield.ie for more.

To tickle and bemuse….STRADBELLY LAUGHS will be on hand to satisfy your hunger for humour over the three days. The line-up of side splitting comic heroes will be announced later in the year. Stradbally will also play host to a number of effervescent art collectives. The incredible LUCENT DOSSIER bring their outrageous, magical vaudevillian circus back to Electric Picnic. Also returning again are ARCADIA with their unique space-aged 360 degree venue complete with robots and junk metal art installations, circus acts, trapeze performers and fire spinners.

Like an offering to the Gods of Exquisite Balloon Sculpture, THISISPOPBABY return to lay a giant golden egg for this year’s Picnic. Where once again their particular brand of Drag Royalty, Petit Queens, Wonky-Poppers and Performance Giants will be hatched. Rising high like a tinfoil soufflé is Mother Goose and Queen of Everything, Panti, laying chicks and pecking disorder… Nobody puts baby in a corner.

And for environment lovers…
As winner of the ‘Greenest Festival’ Award in 2009 awarded by the Irish Festival Awards, Electric Picnic will be endeavoring to make even more efforts this year to protect the environment and incentivize and communicate eco-awareness. We invite you to spend some time in the THE GLOBAL GREEN which is a sustainability sanctuary on site, as well as a platform for raising awareness for social and humanitarian issues. We look forward to working closely with our very valued contributors such as Cultivate, Amnesty International, Oxfam, the Slow Food Eat-In and so many more…And this year we are very excited to announce a 1000+ Cycle to the Picnic for a very good cause..more info to come. Located next door to Global Green is the earthy GREENCRAFTS workshop area which will transport you to former simpler world where the soulful pleasures of handmade goods, from baskets to silver and copper smithing, are re-appreciated and re-learned.

Onto Family matters..Electric Picnic has gained some younger fans over the last few years with a record number of families in attendance last year who all enjoyed the exclusive confines of the Family Campsite and Soul Kids area, nestled in the beautiful walled gardens of Stradbally Hall. This year there will be Kiddie Yoga, the amazing Utensils Puppet Show, Fabulous Felt-making workshops, The Funky Feet dance troupe, Enchanted Fairy Workshops, Jewellery making, Arts & Crafts and of course plenty of surprises! Offering the same amazing free service for parents & children it’s no wonder the Soul Kids and Family Camping Area has become the highlight for our mini picnickers.
Finally..More picnic thrills will be announced throughout the year but we can confirm that all the favorites will be there including The SILENT DISCO, ART TRAIL, FOSSETS CIRCUS, THE VILLAGE GREEN, FARMERS MARKET and BRIDGESTONE AWARD WINNING GOURMET FOOD and the usual array of alternative on-site accommodation PODPADS, YURTS, TIPIS & MYHABS and this year we’re happy to announce an extended Campervan Park to hopefully meet the increasing demand for campervans.

And of course no Electric Picnic would be complete without our fellow Picnickers who have been making the Picnic experience what it is year after year.
