Liverpool Sound City: 2010 Highlight night for me had to be Friday night in a venue that only had one gig one during Sound City (ask them why, not me). ‘The Krazyhouse’ has for 20 years been the #1 alternative club in Liverpool alongside being one of the top 5 in the UK. It hosted a showcase gig for five of the best acts to have been featured on ‘The Pool’ show on Radio Merseyside, hosted by Dave Monks… In Casino Out: I have now seen this band play twice and each time they have really impressed with their grasp of modern rock in a modern world. Like Biffy Clyro, they straddle definition by being able to bring melodic force within a structure of destruction, and they have all the key elements to be at home in NME or Kerrang, while having total ear pleasure that will soar on radio - one of Liverpool’s brightest hopes and currently darkest secrets… http://www.myspace.com/incasinooutband The Other Runners: These chaps were running for the first time around my head tonight and from the start I was a little unsure, but by the third track it became obvious that they were simply doing something right. It’s pretty hard to put them into any single catagory, which became evident and pleasing by the time they had finished. I look forward to hearing their creation in a studio very soon, certainly a band to see again… Higsbosun: At first impression this band are like a 21st century Blur… Within three songs they actually became the band Blur could have been had they not morphed into Gorrilaz. I point this out because by the time this band end, I just want them to carry on doing what they do. This is the sound of britpop growing up in public - modern indie never sounded so fresh and dynamic, beathing new life into a lifeless lost art form… The Jessie Rose Trip: You know when you watch a band start how within 60 seconds if it’s good, great or amazing. Well, Jessie Rose Trip are simply outstanding, forget Duffy, Florence or that trip to the Marina, what we have here is PJ 21st century style. I am just floored by the sense of sound, delivery, melody and vocals. For me there might have been 400 acts on at Sound City, but how many of them were unsigned? Either way if there was a top ten unsigned chart at this event, Jesse Rose would be top five, for me #1… Picture Book: I often am not suprised at the mixing of genres, but when it’s done as well as Picture Book I’m astounded. There’s a female singer who plays violin, a percussionist who just rolls the groove into space, and a bass player who grooves others round his fingers. Combine this with beats that certainly make you move and once again we have an act that is impossible to descibe, but impossible not to love. They have taken a modern dance twist to the live scene and festival fever awaits them. Sunny days just got brighter… You can read TPs SC Here: http://www.shakenstir.co.uk/index.php/live/liverpool-sound-city-day-i/live/18236/ Tom Byrne: Juice FM’s The A-Train has his highlights here: http://www.juicefm.com/blog?id=7126 At this point we will attempt to fill you in on where we went during daylight and what we learned! |
