Cat Power New LP in 2022 Cat Power Previews two new songs from upcoming COVERS record - Billie Holiday’s ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ and ‘Unhate’, a reimagined version of her own song ‘Hate’ from THE GREATEST Listen to ‘Unhate’ here: https://smarturl.it/Unhate Cat Power, the singer/songwriter/producer Chan Marshall, today previews her forthcoming album COVERS(January 14, 2022/Domino) with a fresh interpretation of Billie Holiday’s ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ along with an updated rendition of the Cat Power song ‘Hate’ from THE GREATEST (2006), retitled ‘Unhate’ for the album. She’s also released a music video for ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ which nods to Lady Day as Marshall sings behind a classic 1940’s-style Shure microphone in a cabaret hall evoking the jazz legend’s beautifully restrained vocals. Watch the Greg Hunt-directed video for ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IRxf4Ll5EE&list=PLQqH9ipP84Qni0AUwbxa-X4ex-66OXAmq ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ was inspired by recent losses surrounding Marshall’s inner circle of life - including Sun collaborator Philippe Zdar, who tragically passed in 2019. “When people who you love have been taken from you, there’s always a song that holds their memory in your mind,” Marshall ruminates while talking about the importance that the cover itself holds in her heart. “It’s a conversation with those on the other side, and it’s really important for me to reach out to people that way.” As Marshall explains herself, creating a conversation that spans generations is part of what drives her to continue performing and recording renditions of others’ songs like she’s done here: “I play covers all the time, and it’s important for me to record them because it’s what me and my listeners both get…,” she explains, and in that regard Covers is an impressive document of artistic interpretation that is truly built to last. Cat Power was originally the name of Marshall’s first band, but has become her stage name as a solo artist. Born in Atlanta, Marshall was raised throughout the southern United States, and began performing in local bands in Atlanta in the early 1990s. After opening for Liz Phair in 1993, she worked with Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth and Tim Foljahn of Two Dollar Guitar, with whom she recorded her first two albums, EAR SIR (1995) and MYRA LEE (1996), on the same day in 1994. In 1996, she signed with Matador Records, and released a third album of new material with Shelley and Foljahn, WHAT WOULD THE COMMUNITY THINK. Following this, she released the critically acclaimed MOON PIX (1998), recorded with members of Dirty Three, and THE COVERS RECORD (2000), a collection of sparsely arranged cover songs. After a brief hiatus she released YOU ARE FREE (2003), featuring guest musicians Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder, followed by the soul-influenced THE GREATEST (2006), recorded with numerous Memphis studio musicians. A second album of cover tracks, JUKEBOX, was released in 2008. In 2012 she released the self-produced SUN, which debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200, the highest-charting album of her career to date. Critics have noted the constant evolution of Cat Power’s sound, with a mix of punk, folk and blues on her earliest albums, and elements of soul and other genres more prevalent in her later material.
2021 - A Record Year? Could this be the worst year of music ever with a limited number of releases and few live performances? The few artists favoured by the media - especially the BBC - ruled the airwaves with the most cringe-worthy ITV Adele show in front of A-C listed ‘people’, one of the most embarrassing exhibitions I have ever seen. One BBC radio station even dared compare Adele with the great female singers like Nina Simone. With her heavily Americanised singing accent, this vastly overrated artist sells like few others, while others struggle for airplay and media coverage. It’s shameful and sad. It’s been a year of beautifully presented, remastered anniversary and box set releases. Black Sabbath box sets represent the ultimate for fan gifting while releases from the George Harrison, Beatles, Nirvana, Pink Floyd, The Charlatans, Moby and Metallica reminded me on just how good those times were. And how those releases have stood the test of time. The new version of West Side Story is welcome and I suspect will come close to matching the original 1961 version. During this most difficult year for the coverage of live shows there was a single bright, shining light. By one very coincidence the Sky Arts channel was added to Freeview which allowed access to everyone for - FOR FREE! The quality and range of arts covered was unrivalled; way better than the burgeoning money pit of the BBC; and allowed us to see live performances from many genres. For this reason Sky Arts easily grabbed the mantle of channel of the year for me. Of the records I heard in 2021 these were my favourites in no particular order: Deathretro Reading & Leeds 2022 READING AND LEEDS FESTIVALS REVEAL SIX MAJOR HEADLINERS FOR 2022 26-28 AUGUST 2022 DAVE | ARCTIC MONKEYS | RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE | MEGAN THEE STALLION | BRING ME THE HORIZON | HALSEY ALSO ANNOUNCED ARRDEE, BASTILLE, CIRCA WAVES, CHLOE MORIONDO, DENZEL CURRY, FEVER 333, FONTAINES D.C., GLASS ANIMALS, GRIFF, HYBRID MINDS, JACK HARLOW, JOY CROOKES, JXDN, KID BRUNSWICK, LITTLE SIMZ, MADISON BEER, MÅNESKIN, PALE WAVES, PINKPANTHERESS, POLO G, RUN THE JEWELS, TAI VERDES, WALLOWS, WILKINSON, WOLF ALICE TICKETS ON GENERAL SALE 9AM FRIDAY 10 DECEMBER Reading and Leeds Festivals announce today six huge headliners for 2022 as the dual main stage layout returns meaning more massive names and no clashes. Arctic Monkeys, Dave, Rage Against The Machine, Halsey, Megan Thee Stallion and Bring Me The Horizon will be joined by the most exciting talent in rock, indie, alternative, hip-hop and dance including Wolf Alice, Glass Animals, Enter Shikari, Joy Crookes, Little Simz, Run The Jewels, Fever 333, Pale Waves with even more yet to be announced. The three-day festival takes place on 26-28 August 2022, returning to Reading’s famous Richfield Avenue and Leeds’ legendary Bramham Park. General sale tickets and instalment plans available from 9am on Friday 10th December from www.readingfestival.com/tickets and www.leedsfestival.com/tickets Since first telling the world “don’t believe the hype”, Arctic Monkeys captured the musical zeitgeist and changed the course of guitar music forever. From a self-released EP to becoming one of the biggest bands of the new millennium, no one captures the adrenaline-fuelled ups and downs of nights out, heartbreak, and lust like the Sheffield quartet. Ironic and iconic in equal measure, Arctic Monkeys’ meteoric albums and performances only get sharper and smarter. Playing in the UK for the first time since 2018’s ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’ tour, they are set for a hero’s welcome as they make their triumphant return to headline the main stage in 2022. Dave has cemented himself as a bona-fide generational talent at the top of rap’s apex. At only 23 years old and having won nearly every major UK musical accolade possible, he can now count being the youngest ever solo artist to headline Reading and Leeds as another triumph. Dave’s gift is making the inner-city struggles of young people and immigrants universal, through personal storytelling and incredible wordplay. With a trick bag of fan favourites like Location, Funky Friday, Thiago Silva and fresh off the release of new album ‘We’re All Alone In This Together’, Dave is ready to step fully into his star moment. Rage Against The Machine formed in 1991, rising to acclaim with their fiercely anti-establishment sound merging hip hop, punk and thrash. To date, the band have sold over 16 million records, and are one of the loudest voices in modern music. In times of political hardship, Rage Against The Machine have never been afraid to speak their minds or point a finger at injustice, their previous Reading and Leeds performances have gone down in history - and next year’s headline slot will be no different. With timeless singles such as Killing In the Name and Guerilla Radio in their repertoire that still resonate with the masses in 2022, the Los Angeles legends are set for an unmissable performance. Innovator and visionary Halsey needs little introduction. Their trailblazing streak has long made the US star stand apart from the crowd since their breakthrough 2015 album ‘Badlands’. Uncompromising and disruptive, Halsey has pushed boundaries and raised bars with her ambitious, creative music on their own terms. Through constant reinvention, whether building dystopian worlds, crafting their own mythology and alter-ego or exploring the “joys and horror” of motherhood on latest album ‘If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power’ - Halsey’s rise reflects an artist who made the music world evolve with them and is destined to headline the biggest stage of all. Three-time, Grammy-winning recording artist Megan Thee Stallion is set for a monumental debut main stage west headline set. Before becoming one of the biggest musicians on the planet, Megan rose to prominence with her viral freestyles and captivating cyphers. Several smash songs and projects later, the Houston Hottie has since proven herself as the vital voice the music industry needed. Megan Thee Stallion, with her laser accurate flow and subversive anthems like Body, Savage and WAP, can now add headlining Europe’s most exciting festival to her résumé. Sheffield alt-metallers Bring Me The Horizon have become the biggest band of their generation. Their nearly 20-year strong career has seen them develop from rough-and-ready deathcore upstarts to a slick, pop-metal hit factory with two Grammy nods and consecutive No 1 albums. The five-piece led by frontman Oli Sykes have relentlessly carved their own path from sweaty rock club basements with their futurist approach to the genre. Now with the world at their feet, Bring Me The Horizon will take their rightful place headlining the prestigious main stage at Reading and Leeds Festival. I used to retreat to our ‘front room’, close the door and curtains and sing along to my father’s Paul Anka, Guy Mitchell, Frank Sinatra and others recorded on 78s. It was during my later teenage years while living in Hong Kong that musical films caught my attention. I would often go alone to the cinema in Kowloon where I would watch 2-3 films a day. It was during these cinematic excursions that I first saw West Side Story followed by Funny Girl. While I doubt I appreciated the quality of song-writing at the time, these experiences led to collecting musicals and film soundtracks. It was in later years that I recognised the supreme quality of song-writing in these and other films. Many of the songs featured became musical standards performed thousands of times by hundreds of artists. I’ll confess that I tried to use musicals in my early adult life to form romantic relationships, with little success. The first time was when I acquired 2 tickets to see Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl playing at the Prince Of Wales theatre in London. At the time I was a trainee executive at Harrods in London and was attracted to the most beautiful young Indian lady at work who I invited along to see the show. Streisand was pregnant at the time and was only performing in the matinee shows, which was all I could get tickets for! The show was incredible and co-starred British actor Michael Craig. I then discovered that she was engaged to a manager in menswear… Then the musical Hair came along and once again I booked tickets in the hope of ‘finding love’ - another failure, but the show was fantastic! My final attempt at ‘musical seduction’ came with a lovely Italian lady who accompanied me to see My Fair Lady at a Shaftsbury, London cinema. I had more success here but Italian family tradition beat me. West Side Story with its superb dance sequences by Jerome Robbins and very special song-writing by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim is a film I possess on DVD and watch every few months. I’m more than happy to see and hear the new film version and would heartily recommend it to all, especially those looking for the chance to build romantic relationships - hopefully with more success. My hope is that the millennial generation will discover this and other musicals, like I did very many years ago, and at the same time create new fond memories. Hollywood Records/UMC are pleased to announce the release dates for the soundtrack from the highly anticipated film WEST SIDE STORY, directed by Academy Award winner Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tony Kushner. From 20th Century Studios, The Walt Disney Company will release West Side Story in UK cinemas on December 10th. WEST SIDE STORY has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway show. Original choreography by Jerome Robbins, based on the stage play, book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, with lyrics by the late Stephen Sondheim. WEST SIDE STORY tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. Spielberg said: “I dedicated this movie to my father, but it was my mother’s love of music, combined with my insatiable appetite to understand everything about movie making, that led me to start collecting motion picture soundtrack albums when I was young. I loved the ‘West Side Story’ cast album from the first time I listened to it. As a kid I could sing every one of its songs by heart - and I did sing them, until I wore out the patience of my entire family. The score feels like it’s always been part of me, and I believe that this is the greatest music ever written for musical theater. My sincere hope is that young people out there find this album and fall in love with it as hard as I did.” WEST SIDE STORY Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features 21 songs from the film and will be released in both standard digital and physical (CD and vinyl) configurations, as well as a digital release in Dolby Atmos Music - a new technology placing the listener inside the song in a spatial way, revealing every detail of the music with unparalleled clarity and depth. Both digital versions are set for release on December 3rd, and the CD will be available on December 10th. Pre-order HERE: Leonard Bernstein Stephen Sondheim West Side Story Cast 2021 - West Side Story (lnk.to) Vinyl versions will be available in early 2022. Both physical versions will include liner notes by West Side Story Music Consultant, Oscar-winning composer John Williams (Schindler’s List, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Star Wars, Jaws, Fiddler on the Roof). This reimagining of the beloved musical stars Ansel Elgort (Tony), Ariana DeBose (Anita), David Alvarez (Bernardo), Mike Faist (Riff), Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke), Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank), Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino), with Rita Moreno (as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works), and introduces Rachel Zegler (María). Moreno - one of only three artists to be honoured with Academy, Emmy, GRAMMY, Tony and Peabody Awards - also serves as one of the film’s executive producers. Bringing together the best of both Broadway and Hollywood, the film’s creative team includes Kushner, who also served as an executive producer; Tony Award winner Justin Peck, who choreographed the musical numbers in the film; renowned Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor and GRAMMY Award winner Gustavo Dudamel, who helmed the recording of the iconic score; Academy Award nominated composer and conductor David Newman (Anastasia), who arranged the score; Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home, Thoroughly Modern Millie), who supervised the cast on vocals; and GRAMMY-nominated music supervisor Matt Sullivan (Beauty and the Beast, Chicago, Hairspray), who serves as executive music producer. The film is produced by Spielberg, p.g.a., Academy Award-nominated producer Kristie Macosko Krieger, p.g.a., and Tony Award-winning producer Kevin McCollum. |
