Hinds Live in Manchester Gorilla Manchester, 17 April 2018 A little while ago I received an album by Spanish female four-piece band Hinds. I could not get to grips with its juvenile pop-rock sounds but was quite prepared to view a live performance to perhaps secure a more accurate reading of the band. The Gorilla venue in Manchester was bursting with mostly young Hinds fans - both male and female - and the buzz of anticipation was plain to see and feel. An excited young female fan standing next to me had travelled many miles to see her band after having witnessed and enjoyed the band’s Glastonbury show. Horsey Theo McCabe - vocals, keys Support London four-piece band Horsey looked distinctly trad with their gold jacket uniforms but also brought something quite distinctive to the table. Their music mixes of jazz and heavy/punk rock and as a result is quite distinctive. McCabe and Read provided alternating lead vocals with Read taking the role of a very animated lead-man. Over-heavy amplification meant that hearing lyrics was problematic but thankfully melody just about survived the sonic onslaught. The guys looked good and provided a lively introduction to the night’s main attraction. Hinds Carlotta Cosials - vocals, guitar Hinds is a Spanish indie rock band from Madrid, formed in 2011, consisting of Carlotta Cosials (vocals, guitar), Ana Perrote (vocals, guitar), Ade Martin (bass, backing vocals) and Amber Grimbergen (drums). The original name of the band was Deers, but they changed it at the end of 2014 after a threat of legal action from the similarly named band The Dears. The group chose “Hinds” (female deer) as the new name of the band and officially implemented the name change on 7 January 2015. They have released two albums, one compilation LP and four singles. Their first studio album, LEAVE ME ALONE, was released on 8 January 2016, and their second studio album, I DON’T RUN, was released on 6 April 2018. As soon as the band arrived the very happy atmosphere both on and off stage was palpable. At first sight the girls looked like enthusiastic college students out for a good time while acknowledging their audience with smiles and genuine gratitude. And it was this that made all that followed more than acceptable. Musically, the band rocked in an innocent, very youthful and melodic way. Take the opener from the latest album ‘The Club’ which had some decent guitar licks and voices that were unrefined and almost childlike. However, add this to the band’s absolute joy and enthusiasm and one can understand why they have garnered many younger fans, and a few friendly critics. Joe Satriani’s G3 New LP & Tour

The European leg of the G3 2018 Tour includes shows in Russia, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland and more. “I could say that I’m surprised at the durability of G3 and how much it’s grown, but in a way I’m not,” Satriani says with a laugh, “I think part of its charm and its mojo is in the chemistry of having three top guitarists share what they do on stage. It’s fun, it’s unpredictable, it’s wild, it’s everything you could want in a show.” Joe Satriani released his 16th solo album, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT, in January 2018 via Sony/Legacy Recordings. G3 2018 APRIL TOUR JOE SATRIANI, JOHN PETRUCCI & ULI JON ROTH Apr 15 Lyon, FR L’Amphithéâtre de la Cité des Congrès UK April 24 Southend Cliffs Pavilion Since its debut in 1996, Satriani’s G3 tour has featured the world’s greatest guitarists (everyone from Steve Vai and Eric Johnson to Steve Lukather and Robert Fripp) and has become a consistent concert hall sell-out attraction in the U.S., South America, Europe, Australia and Japan. “I could say that I’m surprised at the durability of G3 and how much it’s grown, but in a way I’m not,” Satriani says with a laugh, “I think part of its charm and its mojo is in the chemistry of having three top guitarists share what they do on stage. It’s fun, it’s unpredictable, it’s wild – it’s everything you could want in a show.” Satriani’s new, instrumentally electrifying album features a power trio of legendary status; Satriani on guitar and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee bassist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple/Black Country Communion) and drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), the latter reuniting with Satriani for the first time since their work in the supergroup Chickenfoot. Satriani is once again joined by producer/engineer/mixer Mike Fraser, his frequent collaborator over the last 20 years, on What Happens Next. Fraser is well-known for recording/mixing every AC/DC album since 1990’s The Razors Edge along with his classic works with Satriani going back to the release of Crystal Planet in 1998. The new tracks vibrate the soul with an energy rarely found these days. From the dynamic opening track, Energy, to the majestic crunch of Thunder High on the Mountain, and the easy, sensual chords of Smooth Soul. This unparalleled rock-rhythm section gives What Happens Next a depth of groove that sets it apart from Satriani’s previous work. In addition to this new album and exciting tour news, a new documentary “Beyond the Supernova” shot by SATRIANI’s filmmaker son, ZZ, made its debut at the Mill Valley Film Festival, in California, this October. The tour documentary chronicles Joe, along with his band and crew, on their last “Shockwave Supernova” tour throughout Europe and Asia. Satriani’s Strange Beautiful Music: A Musical Memoir first released in May 2014 will now be available in paperback. Pre-orders are available now with the official release on November 7, 2017. The paperback version includes a new chapter focusing on Satriani’s last album, Shockwave Supernova. For two decades, the guitar virtuoso has travelled the world, playing to sold-out crowds as both a headliner and as founder of the all-star “G3” guitar extravaganza. Satriani’s studio and live recordings have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide to date and of his many solo albums, two have gone platinum and four others went gold, with 15 Grammy nominations between them. His side project, Chickenfoot, featuring former Van Halen front man Sammy Hagar, former bassist Michael Anthony, and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith saw their debut album certified gold and their second studio album debuted at #9.
Black Sabbath New Box Set
BLACK SABBATH ANNOUNCE ‘SUPERSONIC YEARS – THE SEVENTIES SINGLES BOX SET’ – A LIMITED EDITION 7” VINYL BOX SET RELEASED JUNE 8TH (THROUGH BMG) Despite a run of legendary hit singles in the 1970s, Black Sabbath and the seven-inch single format didn’t always sit well together. After the release of their debut single ‘Evil Woman’ in 1970, followed by their ultimate explosive chart success with ‘Paranoid’, the band were not comfortable with the confines of the mainstream pop format and the audience it brought them, leading to their now legendary self-imposed ban on releasing singles in the early 70s. “We didn’t intend to make a single in the first place,” said Tony Iommi to the Disc and Music Echo in 1971. “But after we’d completed the album, the ‘Paranoid’ track was sufficiently short to be a ‘trailer’ for the LP. We really didn’t expect it to do anything at all. We don’t go into the studio to make singles. We make LPs only. But if there is anything suitable as a result of the recordings, it would be considered, of course.” Black Sabbath’s music was vast, expansive and heavy; not the kind of vision that can be easily shackled to the three-minute pop format. Record Mirror ran a story in November of 1970 stating that “Sabbath have decided to place a ‘ban’ on singles in the future. Their hit, ‘Paranoid’, as far as they are concerned is their first and last single. They will also oppose any attempt to draw singles material from future albums.” Black Sabbath’s ‘ban’ on singles in their own country lasted for more than two years, and good to their word, no singles were issued from 1971’s MASTERS OF REALITY, but in 1972, as a harbinger from fourth LP, VOL 4, ‘Tomorrow’s Dream’ was issued as a 45 and from then on a steady run of singles followed that showed that, despite Sabbath’s initial dislike, many of their songs did lend themselves well to the format. Supersonic Years – The Seventies Singles Box Set, released June 8th through BMG, documents the band’s run of hit singles as never before and features an array of unique content. • This limited-edition box set includes five rare single edits: Iron Man / Sabbath Bloody Sabbath / Am I Going Insane (Radio) / Hard Road / Symptom Of The Universe. The box set features the following singles: Disc 1: Evil Woman (Don’t Play Your Games With Me)/Wicked World – 1970 Pre-order here: https://blacksabbathband.lnk.to/supersonicPR
Josh Rouse New LP & UK Tour Josh Rouse LOVE IN THE MODERN AGE Out April 13 via Yep Roc Records Singer-songwriter Josh Rouse will release his new album Love in the Modern Age on April 13, 2018 via Yep Roc Records. Similar to his work on his album 1972 where he captured the aesthetics of a specific moment in time, Josh’s new album Love In The Modern Age takes inspiration from the sound and production of early 1980’s releases by The Blue Nile, The Style Council and Prefab Sprout. Also serving as inspiration were Roxy Music’s Avalon, Leonard Cohen’s Various Positions and I’m Your Man. Non-ironic touches like sax, handclaps, reverbed guitar, backing vocals and keyboards give the moody but infectious songs a New Romantic flair. Josh Rouse has solidified his status as one of his generation’s most acclaimed songwriters in both the US and Europe, where he’s lived on and off since 2004. Spending the better part of a year touring behind his critically acclaimed eleventh album, The Embers of Time, Rouse was ready for a change. “Coming off such a heavy record, I wanted to try something different,” he explains. “I wanted to explore new sounds and write with a fresh backdrop.” Trading in his trusty acoustic guitar for a synthesizer, Love in the Modern Age still bears Rouse’s distinct fingerprints even as it pushes his limits, and forges a bold new chapter more than twenty years into his celebrated career. Josh Rouse will kick off his tour in the UK in April, followed by North America in May. 2018 UK TOUR DATES APR 24 The Lantern, Bristol, United Kingdom
Anna Burch 1st LP & UK Tour Anna Burch is sharing her new single/video, ‘With You Every Day’ from the debut album QUIT THE CURSE out now on Heavenly Recordings UK tour dates and festival appearances plus new London show announced at Moth Club on 4th September, 2018 Observations on Anna Burch “Frank and gratifying all the same, Burch’s tightly structured pop is an invigorating take on an evergreen sound.” - Pitchfork “For all the sunny melodies an breezy vocals, there’s a simmering fury and unease not far beneath the surface… The bravery in hanging out such soiled laundry can’t go unnoticed, and it’s the album’s greatest asset… The fact it’s wrapped in such a lush indie-pop package only makes it more infatuating.” - Q Magazine, 4* “With their mix of bliss-pop fizz, slacker drag and upbeat jangle, plus her crystalline vocal harmonies, Burch’s songs sound familiar but her lyrics cut straight through the warmth and sweetness..” - Uncut “Comparisons to Courtney Barnett, Waxahatchee, and Eleanor Friedberger lie within her tight songwriting and infectious lyrics… ” - The Line of Best Fit “Burch nails the thrills, anxieties, and heartbreaks that come with being in your twenties.” - Noisey Detroit’s Anna Burch, has shared the new video for single ” With You Every Day” via The Fader. The song grapples with “the frustrations of finding out your new relationship has hit the comfortable routine stage too early”, and is taken from Anna’s debut album, Quit The Curse, out now on Heavenly Recordings. Anna says of the video, “I love performance videos because they break the barriers of a typical concert-going experience. By infiltrating the space of the performers and highlighting the personal dynamics of the group, it draws your attention to the full sound of what the band is playing.” Watch it below: Anna Burch - ‘With You Every Day’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxKb3YgWyU0 Anna will also visit the UK for the first time next month, and will also play a series of festival dates, including End of the Road, The Great Escape and Indietracks. With her debut London show at the Old Blue Last now sold-out, she’s just announced a new date on 4th September at London’s Moth Club Full Tour Dates Sunday 6th May - MANCHESTER - Sounds From The Other City (Heavenly Stage) tickets About QUIT THE CURSE Though the deceptively complex pop of Quit The Curse marks the debut of Anna Burch, it’s anything but the green first steps of a fledgling new artist. The Detroit singer/songwriter has been visible for the better part of her years-long career singing in Frontier Ruckus, or more recently co-fronting Failed Flowers, but somewhere a vibrant collection of solo material slowly began taking form. Growing up in Michigan, her fixation with music transitioned from a childhood of Disney and Carole King sing-alongs to more typically angsty teenage years spent covering Bright Eyes and Fiona Apple at open mic nights. By 18 she was deep into the lifestyle of the touring musician, juggling all the regular trials and changes of young life while on a schedule that would have her gone for months on end. After a few whirlwind years of this, exhausted and feeling a little lost, she stepped away from music completely to attend grad school in Chicago. This respite lasted until 2014 when she moved to Detroit and found herself starting work in earnest on solo songs she’d been making casual demos of for a year or so. Friends had been encouraging her to dive into solo music, and one particularly enthusiastic friend, Chicago musician Paul Cherry, went so far as to assemble a band around scrappy phone demos to push for a fully realized album. “Writing songs that I actually liked for the first time gave me a feeling of accomplishment,” Burch said, “Like, I can do this too! But working with other musicians and hearing the songs go from sad singer/songwriter tunes to arranged pop songs gave me this giddy confidence that I’d never felt before.” The process was drawn out and various drafts and recordings came and went as the months passed. By now Anna was playing low key shows and d.i.y. tours solo and had released some early versions of a few songs on a split with fellow Detroit musician Stef Chura. Even at a slow, meticulous pace, with every step the album took closer to completion, it felt more serious and more real. After a more than a year of piecemeal recording sessions, Anna was introduced to engineer Collin Dupuis (Lana Del Rey, Angel Olsen) who helped push things energetically home, mixing the already bright songs into a state of brilliant clarity. The nine songs that comprise Quit The Curse come on sugary and upbeat, but their darker lyrical themes and serpentine song structures are tucked neatly into what seem at first just like uncommonly catchy tunes. Burch’s crystal clear vocal harmonies and gracefully crafted songs feel so warm and friendly that it’s easy to miss the lyrics about destructive relationships, daddy issues and substance abuse that cling like spider webs to the hooky melodies. The maddeningly absent lover being sung to in ‘2 Cool 2 Care ‘, the crowded exhaustion of ‘With You Every Day’ or even the grim, paranoid tale of scoring drugs in ‘Asking 4 A Friend’ sometimes feel overshadowed by the shimmering sonics that envelop them. “To me this album marks the end of an era of uncertainty. Writing songs about my emotional struggles helped me to work through some negative patterns in my personal life, while giving me the sense of creative agency I’d been searching for.” Emerging from years spent as a supporting player, Quit The Curse stands as a liberation from feeling like Burch’s own songwriting voice was just out of reach - an opportunity, finally, for the world at large to hear what’s been on her mind for quite a while. https://annaburchmusic.com/home Heavenly Recordings release the album in the UK and Europe, with Polyvinyl releasing in the US.
