V Festival 2007! Martha Wainright was our artist of 2005 after releasing an astonishing EP and album, while performing some of the best live shows of that year. Since having an e-mail argument with Sean at Drowned In Sound (Martha’s label) I haven’t been able to see her live, and so she was my next stop at the JJB Arena. With a full band and dressed kill, Martha was magnificent. She’s an intense performer with a powerful, expressive voice and more-than-adequate guitar plucking skills. In addition to playing classics from her last album, she played a new song which hinted at a rather special new album due for release later this year. Recently I saw one of my favourite singer/songwriters, Nanci Griffith play for the first time ever. After a spell back at base camp, it was time to head back over to the JJB Arena to see another female singer/songwriter that I’ve admired from a distance for many years. Sinéad O’Connor is arguably one of the most controversial performers around today, and it’s regrettable that this aspect has clouded her musical prowess. Playing with a full band, Sinéad retains that timeless facial beauty and distinctive vocal power. She opened with newer, unfamiliar songs that while good lacked the melody, impact and intensity of earlier songs. In the festival atmosphere I think this was a mistake but there’s no question that she remains a musical icon and a true international star. |
