V Festival 2007! I was blown away by American singer/songwriter Terra Naomi when I saw her perform at the Live Earth Wembley festival on TV earlier this year. Unfortunately her show in the JJB Arena tent started just ten minutes after Grohl opened so after just two songs I had to leg it over to the tent to catch her. I arrived at the tent somewhat relieved that for a few minutes the rain wouldn’t intervene. Naomi sat behind her keyboards for the first few songs and confirmed to me that she’s a musical powerhouse. The tent was full almost to capacity with people who must have also caught her Wembley appearance (and as a result may well have bought her album), as she sang with passion, truckloads of expression, and with a voice that was surprisingly powerful. Photographers are only allowed to shoot for the first three songs before being whisked away by security, so I had to vacate the pit to return to the Channel 4 stage. I arrived back at the Channel 4 stage to find Grohl performing the last song of his set. He’s a master at writing songs that start out like gently fizzing fuses which gradually gather pace and power until the inevitable explosion… I didn’t recognise the song but it was massive, with the man eventually stalking the stage in a head-banging rage. Magnificent! And this was an acoustic set! More rain and I was soaking through praying that the sun would eventually appear to dry me out. Some hope and I’m now relying on the acts to counterbalance the discomfort. Juliette Lewis didn’t let me down. With face painted Red Indian style (complete with head feather) she bounced onto the stage and launched into her set with a rare ferocity. She has already declared that her love of garage rock exceeds her love of acting and it showed. Backed by a tight band this lady looks as though she’s been a rock star forever, with voice and moves up there with the best. Cynics would say that she’s a pretend rocker looking for a bit of diversity to spice up her life, and to provide filler for periods of in-act-ivity. Forget it, this lady is the real thing and anyone with a bit of rock nouse could see it in her performance. |
