The Temperance Movement Live And so it came to pass with the rampant opening gambit of ‘Be Lucky’ and with it my only criticism of the night. The sound management was very poor and nowhere near the quality of Joshua James’s setup which was as clear as a bell. Another bhefty blues-rocker followed with the bass-thumping ‘Midnight Black’ and with it Campbell more animated than ever before. I have said it before but Campbell possesses one of the most distinctive, best rock voices on the circuit capable of providing the most rivetting live performance. The bass-driven rockers continued with ‘Morning Riders’ with its notable guitar riffs, another super melody, excellent vocal harmonies and drum-play of gut-wrenching quality. The pace dropped substantially with a song that is so Campbell from past times. ‘Chinese Lanters’ is sung unplugged and displays Campbell’s gift for a fine melody and the most heart-rending lyrics. ‘Only Friend’ is one of the blusiest songs and best from the album and really gets the crowd joining with gusto. What a song, what a band! ‘Pride’ slows the pace dramatically with a stripped-down instrumental backing in tune with the song’s style and romantic sentiments. Then it’s back with a ball-breaking thump as yhundering drum beats welcome in ‘Ain’t No Telling’ with another stunning, rasping Cocker-type vocal performance from Campbell. ‘Serenity’ betrays its American roots rock influences with its country winding guitar refrain while the bouncing ‘Know For Sure’ classically rocks ready for the inevitable encore. The fur-collared coat had been discarded many songs before and it was a soaked and excited Campbell that reeled off the two final great songs from the debut album. Sound quality apart, this was a brilliant and exciting show with Campbell at last seeming at peace with himself and his music. This was one hell of a performance!!
