New Model Army Live Chester Live Rooms, Chester, 19 November 2019 Back in 1999 I attended a 10 day music festival in Ireland in county Cork. It was held in a wonderful place called Liss Ard and attended by hundreds of the most dedicated and serious Irish music fans. To give you a flavour of the festival’s quality it included John Cale, Nick Cave, Pulp, John Martyn, Bernard Butler, Bonny Prince Billy, Japan’s wonderful Cornelius, Handsome Family, Mark Eitzel, Afro Celt Sound System, Arab Strap, Drugstore and many more. It was here I met Justin Sullivan who performed several solo acoustic shows. Sullivan attended with his partner Joolz who was there for the literary segment of the festival and read her opwn prose. It was a very special event and I got to like and respect Sullivan a lot but, until now, have never witnessed a performance by his band New Model Army. The Chester Live Rooms is the city’s best rock venue by a country mile and of late has featured some excellent talent. Now this is very handy as it’s my home town so when New Model Army came to town, I quickly put my hand up… But first on tonight’s venue is a band I did not know. Headsticks hail from Stoke On Trent in Staffordshire so this venue cpould be loosely described as local. Band Members Andrew Tranter (vocals, harmonica) It’s the first time I’ve attended The Live Rooms to find a long line of punters waiting to enter the venue. It then struck me that Headsticks may have brought along many of its loyal fans and as their show started (without ceremony) the ruckus that ensued proved that this was the case. Tranter exploded out of the blocks and continued to display a rare passion and enthusiasm. Steve Dunn was superb on electric and acoustic guitars while the bass section provided a floor-shaking, solid foundation. I am not familiar with the band’s music but loved the political and special musical themes underpinned by powerful melodies. Midway through the set and Tranter recited the most beautiful and heartfelt poem exploring despair and hope. The fans’ enthusiasm built through the show and included some pretty skilful backing vocals…I was deeply impressed by the band’s performance and frankly could not think of a better folk/punk/rock warm-up act for the feature band. Setlist Mississippi’s Burning Headsticks Biography Formed in 2012 Headsticks have developed their own brand of Revolutionary Punk Roots Rock’n'Roll, through constant gigging which has seen their profile continually rise alongside the growth of a fanatical fan base. Supports with bands as varied as The Wildhearts, Lindisfarne, Spear Of Destiny, Buzzcocks, and Ferocious Dog have seen their music cross over genre barriers and has been received with the same enthusiasm and passion that they themselves produce in their live shows… honest and raw social commentary delivered with a wry sense of humour, uplifting and always giving 100%. The release of their third studio album KEPT IN THE DARK in March 2019 has been received with favourable reviews from pillars of both the punk rock and folk worlds, as the band continues to cement it’s reputation for crowd pleasing, genre crossing, passion infused live performances. Fast becoming festival favourites, Headsticks continue their crusade to say it like it is and were delighted to be one of just a handful of bands asked to play two sets at 2018’s Rebellion Punk Rock Festival, playing full electric and almost acoustic sets to thunderous receptions and look forward to a busy schedule for Summer and Autumn 2019. Hard hitting, emotive, yet infectious songs and melodies a-plenty have seen the band grow from being an afternoon band to a headliner at many grass roots festivals, and sub headliner at larger events too, as well as playing endless benefits, events, line ups and headline shows of their own… KEPT IN THE DARK already appears to be propelling the band to new heights, and the band have every intention of capitalising on these early signs of success as they aim to reach new audiences with their very unique blend of Punk, Folk, Roots and Ska. Shakespears Sister Live Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. 11 November 2019 Shakespears Sister are: Siobhan Fahey There’s one primary reason for wanting to cover the performance by Shakespears Sister at the regal and sophisticated Bridgewater Hall in Manchester - the song ‘Stay’. Back in the early 90s this song remained super-glued in premier position on the pop chart for many weeks. On release, the ‘Stay’ was accompanied by the most ghostly and sad video with both ladies hovering over what seemed to be a dead or dying body. The song had everything - great melody, great words, great production, great performance, great emotion - it was the perfect pop song. Shakespears Sister released more albums and singles but for me nothing else quite matched the beauty and power of ‘Stay’. So that’s why I’m travelling down the M56 in the pouring rain to catch this vintage duo performance this one song. But first a young lady called Delena who, after some research, still remains a mystery. Accompanied by a keyboardist and guitarist the young lady gave a pleasant vocal performance which combined pop with soul in songs that received a positive response from the audience. Delena’s audience was small but prior to Shakespears Sister’s arrival the venue suddenly filled although not to full capacity. The atmosphere became electric as the arrival moment approached and when the lights dipped the expectant roar almost lifted the roof! The ladies performed with a full band consisting of drums, bass guitar, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, and keyboards. The ladies followed the band onto the stage both sporting guitars. Fahey looked glamorous in her white, sparkling cowgirl suit with Detroit in more sombre, mournful black. Then the fun really started. As soon as the first note of ‘Goodbye Cruel World’ rung out the seated audience stood up as if in salute, and stayed standing throughout the show. While Detroit was anchored behind her mic, an excited and enthusiastic Fahey pranced around the stage. And the song…I think I’ve discovered another Sister winner. After melodious pop arrived the dark, heavy dance beat of ‘Heroine’. The early signs were that this was going to be a very special performance with only a single criticism - the sound management. While visibly things looked wonderful there was a muddiness to the sound which to a degree masked the quality of the vocal performances. As the show progressed it became obvious that Detroit was tasked to sing the more difficult high-noted song passages such as those in ‘You’re History’ and ‘My 16th Apology’ which showed the soul side of the duo’s music albeit with an underlying dance beat. Immediately following ‘Emotional Thing’ a backdrop image appeared taking up the whole of the back wall. It showed a long winding road in a desert scene which Fahey reflected on as “the dark side” perhaps reflecting on the roller coast ride of the duo’s relationship… The following downbeat ‘C.U. Next Tuesday’ and ‘Time To Say Goodbye’ matched the sentiment. Fahey greeted her audience with “We’re so excited to be back in Manchester“ with members of the audience returning the complement big-time. ‘All The Queens Horses’ exemplified the tendency of several songs to reflect on a troubled relationship. There were times when Fahey sided up to her friend and at one point kissed her. The audience enjoyed every move and note, at times joining in with choruses and claps. There were several special moments during the show including the appearance of Richard Hawley who co-wrote and performed ‘When She Finds You’. Buddy Rich The Final Recording
Buddy Rich Drumming legend’s last-ever recording from 1986 - previously unreleased THE FIRST SINGLE ‘WIND MACHINE’ HERE: https://soundcloud.com/gearbox-records/buddy-rich-wind-machine-single/s-ZZaaeEAR/ Liner notes by Cathy Rich New album due out 6th December 2019 via Gearbox Records Today, Gearbox Records and the Rich Estate have announced the forthcoming release of the last-ever recording of American drumming legend, Buddy Rich. Titled JUST IN TIME: THE FINAL RECORDING, the album will be released on 6th December 2019, and also features exclusive liner notes from Rich’s daughter Cathy Rich. The recording was taken in 1986 at Ronnie Scott’s Club, London and features: Buddy Rich, Cathy Rich, Matt Harris, Rob Amster and many more (full details below) You can hear the first single to be taken from the album here: ‘WIND MACHINE’ https://soundcloud.com/gearbox-records/buddy-rich-wind-machine-single/s-ZZaae Speaking about the album and the night of its recording, pianist Matt Harris, says “The lead trumpet player, Eric Miyashiro, had split his lip a week or so before that gig and was in a lot of pain when he was playing. You certainly can’t hear it on the recording… Like any of the road bands in that time period, it was always very exciting to record with the band. It made a lot of the other gigs worth it when you finally recorded, and it also documented the band in its true element. Recording studios can be very intimidating for musicians as opposed to a live gig where you’re putting it all on the line.” “I also vividly remembering Gregg Gisbert’s amazing playing night after night. He always was trying different things which is extremely difficult when you play the same tune night after night I think this recording showcases the band at its highest level. You cannot get great studio musicians to sound like this. This recording is the sound of a “road band” unlike any other!” JUST IN TIME: THE FINAL RECORDING will be available across 4 physical formats and digitally. As well as standard double LP and standard CD, there will also be a special collector’s edition of the album, on triple gatefold vinyl and double gatefold CD, with over 30 minutes of bonus content from the night of the performance, including the incredible extended drum solo from the show’s encore. Pre-order HERE: http://smarturl.it/br-windmachine Album Art “My dad chose set lists for the two nights that I hadn’t heard before. He was always brilliant in choosing the right sets, but this time he shied away from the tried and true and went to places musically that were very different. It was as if he knew that he didn’t have to prove anything anymore and could relax and go wherever he wanted and enjoy it. I think the end result proves just that. For two incredible nights I got to sit in the audience and cheer right along with everyone else. I will always remember that time as one of the greatest moments in my life. Now I can revel in the fact that, thankfully, his last recordings were caught on tape for all of us to enjoy forever.” – Cathy Rich (excerpt from the liner notes) Throughout his long and prolific career Buddy Rich has performed with some of the most legendary artists of the 20th century, from Frank Sinatra and Count Basie to Dusty Springfield and Gene Krupa. His powerful yet virtuosic style of drumming proved hugely influential and extends well beyond the jazz genre, with Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham, Genesis’ Phil Collins, and Queen’s Roger Taylor all citing Rich as an inspiration. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1917 to a show business family, Rich began drumming at only 18 months old and by 1921 was known as “Traps, the Drum Wonder” whilst performing with his parents’ vaudeville act. His performance routine soon took on tap dancing, singing and comedy, and he became the second highest paid child performer of the mid-1920s. By 1938, Rich had discovered jazz and was playing with clarinettist Joe Marsala’s group, before going on to perform with Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey’s big bands. He led his own band during 1945-1947, financially backed by Frank Sinatra, which didn’t take off, before touring with the Jazz at the Philharmonic. He recorded with countless stars for Verve during the 1950s, including Charlie Parker, Lester Young, and Art Tatum. |
