Rare PAVAROTTI DUETS Released

p-72

7 TRACKS UNEARTHED, FEATURING  BONO / LOU REED / JAMES BROWN / BARRY WHITE / STING / BRIAN MAY & ROGER TAYLOR

“A great friend, a great voice and the world is a smaller place without the big man” – Sting

His heavenly voice will be with us for a very long time” – Brian May

Luciano is one of the great emotional arm wrestlers… he will break your f****** arm”  – Bono

p-111

Few singers can choose to duet with anyone they want, but the legendary Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti did just that. Not only did he break down the barriers between opera and rock & pop, transcending musical genres, but during his lifetime he duetted with the biggest rock stars on the planet. Six of these star-studded duets are to be released for the very first time, over 15 years since they were recorded.

The previously unreleased recordings appear as rare bonus material on the official soundtrack to the major Hollywood documentary film ‘Pavarotti’ – directed by the Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard and released theatrically next month – and the companion three-CD set ‘Pavarotti: The Greatest Hits’. Just when fans thought they had heard all that Pavarotti recorded during his colourful career, only now will the following vibrant performances be shared with the world:

Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’ with Bono
Perfect Day’ with Lou Reed
When We Dance’ with Sting
It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World’ with James Brown
You’re the First, the Last, My Everything’ with Barry White
Too Much Love Will Kill You’ with Queen’s Brian May & Roger Taylor

p-55

Between 1992 and 2003, a series of benefit concerts – known as ‘Pavarotti & Friends’ – were held in the tenor’s home town of Modena, Italy, with the view of raising money for humanitarian groups including War Child and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In a testament to his capacity to connect with an extremely varied cross-section of artists, scores of famous names joined forces for a good cause. It is from these special gala concerts that the audio has been unearthed and remastered. Each track displays how effectively Pavarotti’s supremely distinctive voice works alongside those from completely different areas of music. The results are utterly unique.

p-39

Following his death in 2007, Luciano Pavarotti’s phenomenal legacy is defined by his capacity to open up the world of opera to a wider audience, and these musical collaborations with icons from pop, rock and soul revealed his magnificent voice to a new generation of fans.

As President of Decca Records Rebecca Allen explains, “These duets are a wonderful reminder of Pavarotti’s humanitarian side. He used his fame and art to help benefit people, and was able to bring the most brilliant and like-minded singers together for a good cause. This is a central theme to the powerful Ron Howard film, and perhaps one that is forgotten – as his voice was so big and his operatic performances legendary – so it is fitting to share these hidden gems with the world at last.”

p-29

Also featured, and being made available for the first time, is ‘Miserere’, co-written by Italian rock star Zucchero and Bono, and here recorded with chart-topping tenor and label-mate Andrea Bocelli. It was, in fact, the very same track that Bocelli had recorded as a demo for Zucchero to send to Pavarotti in 1992. Extremely impressed with Bocelli’s voice, Pavarotti urged Zucchero to use Bocelli instead of him! In the end Pavarotti did record the track, which became a huge hit, but it marked the beginning of Pavarotti and Bocelli’s friendship, and they went on to perform this duet together on stage. However, it was never released commercially, until now.

In its 90th anniversary year, Decca celebrates the enduring relationship between the legendary tenor and the historic label with the release of these two albums – these duets in particular providing a poignant reminder of Pavarotti’s compassion, humanity and spirit. Never before, or since, has an operatic superstar made friends and worked with so many comparable stars from the world of popular entertainment. That was the special genius of Pavarotti.

Camden Rocks 2019 - Day 2

ap-19

poster-18Day 1 had revealed the level of talent that exists here in the UK, much of it that remains hidden from view without the exposure of radio airplay, and support of record company marketing bucks. As I emerged from the Camden underground I hoped that it would be a little cooler (no, a lot cooler) and the streets less crowded. Well one of two wasn’t bad, and yes it felt even warmer! My first visit was to The Electric Ballroom and a band I did not know called Faers. And as the first band to perform at midday on a Sunday, I fully expected thin crowds…

London based FAERS saw plays on Radio X, BBC Introducing and more and with new single ‘Time’ FAERS are ending a successful year, which has seen the band play Y Not Festival amongst other slots. There’s shades of Maccabees, Bombay Bicycle Club and The Cure in their style and music. “A band to watch out for in 2017” - Gig Sluts.

Faers are creating something that is incredibly on trend at the moment. Perfect for daytime play on the likes of Radio 1 or Radio X, Lust and Youth is a scintillating track that offers a more intense, enigmatic side to a band who are ready for the attention they will, deservedly, start to receive.” - It’s All Indie

In a very sparsely populated venue the band performed as though they were at a sold-out Glastonbury. Rees looked the part of a rocking lead-man while the rest of the band threw huge bass lines and the songs featured strong melodies. There’s a strong emotional side to the band and a passion that was unmistakeable.

Glamour Of The Kill were formed in January 2007. They take their name from a line in the title track of He Is Legend’s 2004 album, I Am Hollywood. The band’s mainstream popularity was assisted by a 10/10 Metal Hammer review for their debut demo EP, Through the Dark They March. This led to tours with Bullet for My Valentine, Darkest Hour and Avenged Sevenfold. They have cited major influences as Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, The Misfits, Black Flag, The Ramones, Nirvana, Sepultura, As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, and Korn.

Thankfully for the band the crowds had swelled somewhat and the atmosphere had certainly grown in excitement terms. Heavy rock was the order of the day as the band wore their influences for all to see. What emerged was one of my favourite performances of the festival watched by a lot of 30-something rock fans. In fact I had noticed that the age of many festival-goers was older than I expected. Thomson on drums was amazing while Richmond on lead vocals proved an animated player with a  powerful voice. Songs also had a sharp edge, tinged with a degree of pop sensibility. Hell, it was near-perfect.

Camden Rocks 2019 - Day 1

fp-39

I’ve long been planning on writing a song about the northbound Northern Line platform at Waterloo Station,” says the former hardcore punk-turned-folk-singer-songwriter. “That was a place of much excitement to me. As a kid, coming in from Winchester, I wasn’t interested in getting to anywhere else in London. It was always Camden.”  - Frank Turner

As a Midlander I don’t go south much and when I do it’s usually to my family in the Surrey suburbs. For reviewing purposes, Manchester, Liverpool and other close localities provide all the music I need - including festivals. It was for this reason, and with some trepidation, that I decided to venture down to the big smoke and The Camden Rocks Festival - a bit of danger does me good…

The festival in North London offered everything a festival should - twenty clustered venues, well over three hundred acts spread over two days, good travel links and much more. Basing myself in Surbiton, Surrey travel was easy via mainline trains and a direct underground route from Waterloo to Camden Town station which is located right at the centre of all the action. A quick visit to a pub just metres away for my pass and programme before making the briefest of journeys to one of London’s most iconic venues - The Electric Ballroom.

c-35

This was my first visit to The Ballroom and after negotiating the tight security checks was surprised to find that the venue opened up to reveal something much larger with fabulous separated bar facilities, a large stage and more friendly and confidence-building security.

cp-16

http://collateralofficial.com/

When Collateral started out, they were known as the Angelo Tristan Band, with frontman Angelo and bass player Jack forming the nucleus of the band. Since then, almost 5 years ago, they have worked tirelessly to grow the act, the fanbase and the bands profile. In true rock and roll style, the ride hasn’t been easy for this four-piece, but their sheer grit and determination have seen them overcome obstacles and go from strength to strength. The past few years have been no exception, but, with the recent addition of new members Todd Winger (guitar) and Ben Atkinson (drums) and the release in May 2018 of their debut single ‘Midnight Queen’, this band have really stepped up their game and are now starting to attract the attention they deserve.

For a band that was totally new to me (and probably to many others) I was impressed with both the quality of songs and vocal/instrumental performance. Leadman Angelo looked like a rock ‘n’ roll hero and vocally delivered in spades, and with a debut album waiting in the wings I witnessed enough to look out for it. Time to move on to another iconic venue for anotehr band I knew nothing about…

alivep-1

It became obvious that Camden must be one of London’s very major attractions with its communication links, shops, eateries, venues and dissected by a wonderful canal. In fact struggling through the thousands of people to arrive at Dingwalls Canalside took longer than it should have done. And when I eventually arrived at the venue it was so packed I could just about see the lead singer of Alive With Eyes. This young rock 4-piece band came together in 2013 and it seemed had garnered a large number of loyal fans. Lead vocalist Jake Adams was in good form and displaying a smile throughout must have been happy with the great reception he received. The band’s rock was mild but very effective with melody at its heart. I was impressed. Two songs and I was off to catch the next show.

burkep-1

https://en-gb.facebook.com/LiamBurkeMusic/

Back over the canal and I retraced my steps to find a pub called the Brewdog and my first acoustic show of the festival. Liam Burke performed with humour and skill in front of a few folk fans in the pub’s cellar. A couple of pop-tinged songs later and I was off again back to The Electric Ballroom.
