Benoit Piqulard (Thomas Meluch) HYMNAL. Kranky

A hypnotic and borderline mystical musical journey with spaced out electronic sounds and distant vocals. Several of the songs feature Simon & Garfunkel style harmonies which are pleasant enough but the most interesting tracks are those that are dominated by electronic/instrumental sounds. ‘Censer’ is one such track which wanders onwards and upwards in something that sounds like a drug trip (a pleasant one…). There’s really nothing to dislike here but then neither is anything to rave about.

Robert Vincent LIFE IN EASY STEPS. DB Industries

“I’ve done the whole thing of trying to be what people want me to be,” Rob explains in his warm and good-humoured Scouse drawl, “And in the end I just thought I’ve had enough of this. The songs I’ve written now, some of them sound like Johnny Cash and some of them like 50s rock’n’roll – but they’re what I wanted to write. And the funny thing is, the more honest I am the better people like it.”

It all goes back to that house in Crosby, north Liverpool where, alongside country and The Beatles, his older brothers initiated him into the mysteries of Pink Floyd. ‘Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’ taught young Rob that a song could be cosmic and mystical – but it had to be a proper song too. He became fascinated with lyrics. “It wasn’t just what Roger Waters wrote but why he wrote it,” he says. “That really interested me as a kid. And then I started meddling with the guitar…”

“The record is about trying to be the best person you can possibly be,” he continues, “And I think that’s what most people want from themselves. You want to be a better human being. I write from the point of view of being a dad, and worrying about the world my kid is growing up in. The world focuses so much on the individual – iPhone, iPad, I, I, me, me all the time – and there’s something unhealthy about it. We feel cut off from other people. But if music is good at anything, it’s reconnecting us.”

“Having a kid so young gave me a way of looking at how people act towards each other, especially with children,” he explains. “There’s a song on the album called ‘Heaven Knows’ that wonders if maybe we were happier when we had more social boundaries, not fewer. I’m not religious but you wonder if some things – not everything, but some things – might have been a bit better in the days when we all went to church on a Sunday, dealt with all the grief and misery of the week, and came out feeling better. I think people are missing those boundaries.”

Vincent, more than may artists today, wears his influences and genre sympathies boldly and brazzenly on his sleeves here. Beautiful opener ‘In The Light Of The Stars’ with its fragile, moving glacially paced intro, smooth-as-silk vocal, super-strong melody, closing explosive crescendo is solidly based on simple alt country. It’s a gorgeous song, wonderfully performed and perfectly produced. ‘Burns’ is more traditional country with Vincent (unfortunately) pretending to be a cowboy vocalist (why do today’s UK artists try to sound so American?) instead of a scouser singer/songwriter. That said this song could be one that breaks him in the USA (where it sounds like he is heading) and secure Radio 2 airplay over here. It’s a beauty. ‘Riot’s Cry’ is blatant Beatles and all the better for it! It rocks out nicely with another powerful melody driving it along at fast pace. Vincent is nothing less than convincing - this guy could probably sing just about any style of modern music.

Vincent has created an important piece of work here that could so easily find itself crashing into the USA Billboard chart, and not least because he sounds one of their own (a trick Adele learned on her last smash record)… Every song here hits the mark in just about every way and I’m wondering how he is going to better it next time around. Excellent.

Amelia Curran SPECTATORS. Blue Rose

I saw this young Canadian singer/sonwriter perfrom live in Liverpool recently and was impressed. However, for me, the album sounds much better perhaps because the venue had less than perfect acoustics. And it is already one of my favourite albums of the year. The first thing that struck me when I pressed ‘play’ was the astounding sound quality that hits you with sledgehammer force. ‘Years’ opens the record and is a major highlight with its monster melody, gorgeous lyrics and a voice that’s clear, fluid, controlled and expressive - without going over the top. ‘What Will You Be Building’ repeats the trick while next track ‘Modern Man’ introduces some interesting instrumental touches including very effective drum rolls. Curran knows a good melody when she sees one and this one is up there with the best on the album. ‘Blackbird On Fire’ opens with some striking acoustic guitar before Curran fings out her vocal in a song with a thumping bass rhythm, great lyrics and another memorable melody.

‘The Great Escape’ opens with the most moving cello notes to introduce one of the finest songs heard so far this year. Orchestral strings add significantly to the songs beauty but Curran also gives the performance of the album. Stunning. Every song here is capable of dragging you into this wonderful record and holding you in  a vice-tight grip. This young lady deserves radio airplay and truckloads of it.

Hadouken! Review

Hadouken! EVERY WEEKEND. Surface Noise

Hadouken! Is a British band and was formed in London in 2006 by singer, writer and producer James Smith, alongside his girlfriend, synth player Alice Spooner, with guitarist Daniel “Pilau” Rice, bassist Christopher Purcell and drummer Nick Rice. The band name is taken from the name of a special attack in the Street Fighter video game series. It was in Leeds, that Hadouken! began their own record label, Surface Noise Records.

‘The Vortex’ opens the album with threatening, closing electronic sounds before that dreaded bass rhythm invades and conquers. Studio trickery dicates opens this track but when the rap vocal arrives alongside a rocky undertone the deal is done and one can easily see why this band is much loved by teen dance crazy crowds. Strangely enough, lyrics for such a song aren’t bad at all and while they don’t rank in the top echelon for this genre there a bit of an eye-opener. Biting rhythm and Hammond introduce ‘Levitate’ which includes a heavy dose of pop sensability and could well be the song that breaks Radio 1. ‘Bliss Out’ is a much more adventurous track and the most radio-friendly on the album with its stuttered rhythm, prime vocal and hook-laden choruses. ‘As One’ sustains the pop momentum with a love song and lyrics which indicate the this band is not just a flash in the pan: “I kissed resistance goodbye/I got lost in your eyes/No I won’t let you down…”

‘Parasite’ is a much darker song that reminds me very much of arguably the best band in this dance/rock genre. There’s a welcome diversity of sounds, moods and pace including an epic ‘Bad Signal’ using a very effective ‘can’t Keep You Hangin’ On’ sample. ‘Stop Time’ with its pounding beat and multi-layered vocals is one of several highlights.

Primal Scream - ‘More Light’
New album out May 13th
First single ‘It’s Alright, It’s OK’ May 6th

After debuting new track ‘2013’, Primal Scream return May 13th with one of the year’s most eagerly awaited albums; ‘More Light’, out on the band’s own First International label through Ignition Records.

An adventurous, 13-track collection of new songs – and the band’s first LP in five years – ‘More Light’ was written by Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes and produced by David Holmes. It features guest appearances from Robert Plant, Kevin Shields, The Pop Group’s Mark Stewart and Jason Faulkner.

Tracks include ‘Elimination Blues’ – with vocals from Robert Plant – ‘River of Pain’, the caustic call-to-arms of ‘Culturecide’ – where Mark Stewart guests on the chorus – as well as ‘Invisible City’ and the classic ‘It’s Alright, It’s OK’, out May 6th.

Bobby Gillespie says: “I wanted to convey coming out of a dark time and into a good one…We always knew it wasn’t going to be a straight ahead, balls to the wall, high energy rock ‘n’ roll, two guitars, bass and drum record. It’s sophisticated, layered, cinematic and orchestral; obviously working with Holmes we were hoping to make a record more in keeping with that vision.”

primalp-1
The Guardian G2’s said: “’More Light’ sees the band back at their most adventurous…a 70-minute-plus psychedelic trip.” The album was recorded at Das Bunker, London and Vox Studios, LA and mixed by Rich Costey at Eldorado Recording Studios in LA, with the album sleeve designed by 2005 Turner Prize nominee Jim Lambie.  It’s the follow-up to 2008’s ‘Beautiful Future’.

Primal Scream are: Bobby Gillespie, Andrew Innes, Martin Duffy, Darrin Mooney, Barrie Cadogan and Simone Butler.

Stereophonics Great New LP

Stereophonics GRAFFITI ON A TRAIN. Stylus

“I found myself walking into a studio with 40 unfinished ideas, rather than 10 finished ones,” says Kelly on the album’s genesis. “And by doing that the songs became way more unpredictable… the band and everyone involved had a good time doing it because we knew we were doing something we hadn’t done before.”

Kelly Jones’ comment accurately reflects the final sound and songs of this brand new album which could just end up as one of the band’s very best. In addition to writing and performing Kelly has co-produced it and I have to say it’s one of the best-produced rock albums I’ve heard in recent years.

The album opens brilliantly with ‘We Share The Same Sun’.  The song’s acoustic guitar intro strum eventually explodes like a well concealed rock time-bomb. Kelly’s voice sounds somehow more mature and definitely different. There’s a huge melody and I reckon this should have been the first single by a country mile. Superb! Next is the album’s title track which also opens even more quietly and ends up as one of the most beautiful and moving rock ballads of this or any other year. Kelly’s writing genius really shows up here in both lyrics and the most subtle rock arrangement that never overshadows the song’s moody vibe. And Kelly sounds bloody brilliant…Check out the stunning guitar solo and the magnificent orchestration arrangement by David Arnold.

Then comes the first single ‘Indian Summer’ which includes more orchestral strings during the song’s introduction. It fairly swings along and while I can understand the powers-that-be thinking it’s the most radio-friendly, I think the band has missed a trick - admittadly a more adventurous one. ‘Take Me’ is a darker, more contemplative song with yet another stonking melody while ‘Catacomb’ explodes into life with a blues rocker of memorable proportions driven by magnificent instrumentals and a cracking, loose-canon vocal from the man. ‘Roll The Dice’ offers a vibrant mix of genres - rock, pop, blues and more - to create yet another album highlight. ‘Violins and Tambourines’ is a slow-paced, gentle slice of Americana and a welcome respite from the previous epic tune. Check out the stripped-down instrumental backdrop and the subtle guitar strum that dominates so wonderfully. Then witness the build-up from that quiet strum to ultimately a full orchestral/band outro. Stunning!

‘Been Caught Cheating’ is a delightful slice of soul/blues that fits surprsingly well into this diverse musical platter. And it sounds as though the band has been performing this style of music for the last 50 years.. In fact the whole album sounds more relaxed, more confident, and oozes musical integrity. Hell, even non-fans of the band should love this excellent piece of work..

Hysteria 2013” Released digitally Tuesday 19th March 2013

Def Leppard start their “VIVA Hysteria!” exclusive eleven show residency at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas on Friday 22nd March 2013

On the 3rd August 1987 British rock band Def Leppard released the album “Hysteria”. Already a major force in rock music, “Hysteria” catapulted the band into the stratosphere. The statistics for “Hysteria” are astounding. The album has sold in excess of 20 million copies and counting.  Due to the incredible success of previous album “Pyromania” (released in 1983) and “Hysteria” Def Leppard are one of only five rock groups who can claim two separate original 10 million plus selling albums in the US.  The others are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Van Halen. The “Hysteria” album also spawned 7 hit singles! Enormous hits such as “Pour Some Sugar On Me”, “Animal”, “Love Bites”, “Armageddon It” and “Rocket” are rock staples that still enjoy huge popularity today and have helped make Def Leppard Britain’s greatest ever arena rock band. The album remains Def Leppard’s best loved…

2013 sees Def Leppard release “Hysteria 2013” – a contemporary take on their classic album’s title track. Produced by Def Leppard and Ronan McHugh, the single was recorded in Joe’s Studio in Dublin, Eire.

Joe Elliott says “We wanted to do something special to coincide with the Las Vegas Viva! Hysteria residency, so we decided that to re-record the Album’s title track would be the perfect way to bring together the live & the studio experience in a 2013 celebration of all things Hysteria.”

def-15

Fresh off their 2012 USA “Rock Of Ages” tour, Def Leppard has announced plans for an exclusive eleven show residency at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas. The band’s will be playing songs from across the whole spectrum of their career in addition to their iconic album “Hysteria” being played in full. Entitled VIVA Hysteria!, the spring 2013 residency will kick off on Friday, March 22 and run through Saturday, April 13. Show time is 8 p.m.

def-13

Produced exclusively by AEG Live, VIVA Hysteria!, will feature an elaborate set design created only for Def Leppard’s Las Vegas residency and will include an encore performance highlighting other classic material from throughout the band’s career. Known for legendary big-scale arena shows, Def Leppard will bring their over-the-top production to The Joint offering an up-close-and-personal experience like never before. With the furthest seat only 155 feet from the intimate venue’s stage, VIVA Hysteria! is unlike any show the band has ever done or will ever do again.

def-14

Having sold over 100 million albums worldwide since their debut release in 1980 and proved themselves one of rock music’s hardest working and consistently powerful live bands (playing to over 50 million fans in the last 15 years alone), Def Leppard’s “Hysteria Re-Recorded” is a single not to miss

B.R.M.C. New Album

B.R.M.C. SPECTER AT THE FEAST. V2

“A Good Record with Moments of Greatness” is the way one fan described the new album, and I reckon it’s pretty close to the truth. Here’s what the band say about it:

“Hey guys, I would like to be the first to tell everyone who has been patiently waiting, that the new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club album is officially confirmed to be released in March 2013. This album has taken every last ounce of us to bring to life, and if it wasn’t for you guys keeping us going, we don’t know if it would’ve ever seen the light of day. It’s going to be a joyful day indeed when we get to see you all again and share these songs with you. Peter, Leah and myself are dying to get out of this studio right now and back into the fight. It’s taken us a long while getting back on our feet, but the time has come.”

Here’s what another fan said about the album:

“In many ways, SPECTER AT THE FEAST is an album that has one eye on the past and one on the future. The band retains the same sound as it generally always has, but the band doesn’t seem to strive to recreate scenes from its past either. A notable example is the first single released to promote the album, “Let the Day Begin.” This song was initially written and released by bassist Robert Levon Been’s father’s band in 1989; his father died in late 2010 (while the band was touring), and this song serves as a tribute to him - his son re-recorded one of his late father’s greatest hits. The song, aside from being a pretty touching (and lively) tribute is one of the best songs on the record. In context of SPECTER AT THE FEAST, it’s just one example of how the band is attempting to move forward while remaining faithful to its roots.”

I first came across the band in a rather unconventional manner. BRMC performed one of the 9 songs in the hard core porn movie 9 SONGS. Since then I have aquired all the band’s albums and do have a few favourites - HOWL, BEAT THE DEVIL’S TATTOO and B.R.M.C.. One of the things I love about this band is their ability to offer diverse sounds (but somehow still retain a signature sonic identity) and these three albums demonstrate this aspect very well indeed. With SPECTER AT THE FEAST there’s a reversion to sounds originating back in the late 90s. I really wasn’t sure whether I liked the record on first and even second listen but on the third spin it hit home like an exocet missile, and I love it. Further, I imagine that live performance of the album will be an event not to miss for all rock fans.

brmc-13

‘Fire Walker’ serves as an introduction with its Asian-sounding opening instrumental passage. Then an electric guitar enters with a deep growl followed by the distant vocal. The song represents the opening homage salvo to the band’s ‘fifth member’ who died back in 2010. The lumbering bass rhythm is overlaid by a powerful melody rendering this 6 minute, beautifully produced, wonder an album highlight. However, ‘Let The Day Begin’ ups the ante with a fast-moving and epic cover of a song originally recorded by The Call. It’s a stunner! ‘Returning’ is just a beautiful song with some fine drumming and arguably the most expressive vocal on the record. At this point I’m beginning to wonder why these songs, after several listens, have suddenly become as good as they are for me…

Fuzzy guitars, echoed/distant vocals and powerful bass rhythms continue as the album progresses through the contemplative emotion of ‘Lullaby’, heavy blues/rock vibe of ‘Hate The Taste’, and the driving radio-friendly stunning rocker ‘Rival’. Even the only weaker song ‘Teenage Desease’ could be a highlight on most other bands records… ‘Some Kind Of Ghost’ moves at glacial pace and exhibits strong blues tendancies. ‘Sometimes The Light’ is mystical, galactic delight that sounds like a spaceship in slow, steady orbit. Closer ‘Lose Yourself’ finishes as the album started - with an album highlight. It is not only the writing and performances that make this album great, it’s the wonderfully judged production that ties up what is a glorious musical package. ESSENTIAL!
