Zoot Woman ZOOT WOMAN. Wall Of Sound

Zoot Woman comprises Stuart Price (Keyboards, Rhythms Digitales), Johnny Blake (vocals, guitar) and Adam Blake (bass). The trio’s second album replaces much of the previous record’s electronic manipulation (although some magical wizardry still remains) with more down-to-earth indie pop with more than just a hint of soul.

Grey Day opens the album with pounding drums, fizzing keyboard notes, and Johnny Blake’s strong vocal. A key aim of any band should be to aim for sonic distinction. The song succeeds in differentiating this band from others, not least for its dominant organ vibe. Add a decent melody, harmonies and lyrics, a downbeat ambience, and the result is an extremely strong album introduction. The next song, Taken It All, literally spits its sound out of the speakers and I am immediately struck by something all too rare these days - superb sound quality. The song’s not bad either with its R&B vibe although it’s a tad one-dimensional. Gem repeats the dose but includes a couple of nice guitar riffs, and a dark, relentless organ grind. Better…

Hope In The Mirror injects a strong dance vibe to proceedings together with great drum rolls and an altogether more interesting instrumental arrangement. Johnny Blake’s vocal is perfectly judged, cleverly manipulated, and with a strong melody makes this a highlight of the album. Then the very beautiful Snow White makes its entrance aided by nice acoustic moments from guitar, piano and orchestral strings. For me, this is the strongest song on the album. Woman Wonder injects an Eastern feel to the collection and it’s as clever as hell - another highlight. Calm is an instrumental track full of vibrant, exciting and wholly inventive electronic manipulation, underpinned by a solid melodic foundation - a fascinating track and another highlight.

In this rather homogenous musical climate, Zoot Woman has created an album of distinctive sounds with a deft and intelligent mix of real and electronic instrumentation. The album is strong on melody, and has a seductive ambience that may ultimately win you over. It may take a few listens but I can assure you of an interesting, off-the-beaten-track journey.

3.5/5
