It seems to me that the UK’s indie label Bella Union can do no wrong. Here is the label’s latest signing and arguably one of the most intriguing. Stephanie Dosen’s music and delivery straddles the pop/folk generic fence; one that can go horribly wrong and end up in abject failure. Dosen hurdles it with ease not least due to a heavenly, sincere voice, sedate pace and wonderful song writing.

On the album there is no better example of the lady’s craft than that of opener This Joy, with its delicately plucked strings, a deeply moving ambience, super-strong melody, and a sweet, natural voice (that compels one to listen intently). I understand this song is to be the young lady’s first single and I just hope that in generates the airplay it deserves… Next track Vinalhaven Harbor provides an excellent showcase for a voice that is destined to be one of the most revered in 2007. Upbeat Only Getting Better possesses a solid acoustic guitar backdrop and a (slightly) more aggressive vocal that illustrates Dosen’s ability to match vocal tone with mood. It’s a beautiful song and another potential single. Owl In The Dark tales a more contemplative route with its glacial pace and mournful string arrangement. Throughout the album Dosen’s own backing vocals add poignancy, drama and depth, as in this and the next track Death & The Maiden. One has come to expect a few weak spots in even the best albums, but it’s not the case here, because while each song has the Dosen ‘trademark’ there’s a consistent level of diversity in both pace and mood. In summary, if you like female singer/songwriters then this beautiful song collection should be at the top of your must-have list. A LILY FOR THE SPECTRE is an inspiring second album and essential listening.
