Shiny Toy Guns WE ARE PILOTS. Mercury

While I have to admit that electro rock/pop is not really my bag, there’s something seductive about the Shiny Toy Guns, and I strongly suspect that on the strength of this album the band could go on to shift units big style…

You Are The One opens the album with one of the album’s strongest hands. Synths and drums introduce the twinned vocals of Chad Petree and Carah Faye, along with massive melody and a soundscape of epic proportions. A single? I think so…Le Disko features a cute rap vocal from the female half of the vocal pair (Carah) and a song that is heavily beats driven. It’s another single and a song that is featured on one major TV advert campaign already. Songs with a very strong dance vibe pepper this album (Jackie Will Save is another example), even when synths are combined with rocky guitars and drums. But more importantly the band has its own distinctive sonic signature combined with strong melodies and some pretty sensible lyrics. Chemistry Of A Car Crash, Shaken, We Are Pilots and Waiting are prime examples of this. This is a solid album with not one weak song in sight, and nicely diverse of pace and mood. Just how the band translate these epic soundscapes to a live ambience remains to be seen, however, this album comes with a strong recommendation. Mainstream it may be but it is also distinctive and beautifully produced. And for those that thought electro pop was a thing of the past, think again…
