Pepe Deluxe SPARE TIME MACHINE. Cats Kills Records

The Finnish trio of DJ Slow, Ja-Jazz and James Spectrum have been around since 1995 creating the most bizarre studio sounds. This is the band’s latest outing, a mind and ear-boggling mix of electronic and conventional instrumentation, in-yer-face Yankee sounding vocals, and more. It’s a blast!

As much as we love serious contemporary music here at Shakenstir, we occasionally like to let our hair down a tad and listen to music that, shall we say, is totally different and pure unadulterated fun. Welcome to the world of Pepe Deluxe, and the sonic maelstrom that is SPARE TIME MACHINE. The Mischief Of Cloud Six opens with a vocal that sound more like Mid-West Yank, than Nordic. It’s a bewildering array of electronic sounds, flashing vocals, soaring guitars and ends with a wild laugh. Mad and irresistible. Psychedelic Ms. Wilhemina And Her Hat opens with a cinematic electronic sound, before opening out with echoed vocals, diving guitars and a stronger melody. There’s also a blues rock flavour here that lifts the song (well) above the humdrum. Go For Blue opens with screeching Hammond as the song begins to race along at breakneck speed - pushed along by smashed snares, and a distant vocal interspersed with bass guitar riffs. Then Last Of The Great Explorers sails in with an extraordinary mix of galactic sounds and blues vibe. You work it out! But it bloody works! This is a very different album that majors on the creation of original and distinctive sounds; a clever mix of generic styles - new and old; and then some… The jagged, garage rock Pussy Cat Rocks vocal chorus consists of “Fucker, fucker, fucker, fucker, fucker, fucking cat.” Apple Thief is a haunting, ambient pop song with highly original vocal choruses and occasional drum banter. Lucky The Blind vs. Vacuum Cleaning Monster is an intriguing mix of country and House music. It’s all thoroughly mad and if you possess a taste of the adventurous, then this album is for you. For me, it’s an album that I would play to overcome sadness, lethargy and boredom. And for that I will be more than grateful…
