Howling Bells HOWLING BELLS. Bella Union

Bella Union is fast becoming the most adventurous International indie record label out there. Its roster is diverse, original and bursting with quality. Howling Bells is an Australian band that has garnered a fair amount of media attention recently and deservedly so. I’m looking forward to seeing them live supporting Low very soon, so look out for the live review – it promises to be one helluva show…

The Bell Hit opens proceedings with a Jeff Buckley style instrumental roll before Juanita Stein’s sweet voice enters to entrap you. The sound is rich in originality with melody to burn. Velvet Girl repeats the trick with additional, delicious vocal harmonies, and choruses that most bands would die for. With Low Happening the vibe becomes more jagged and rocky with Stein’s voice taking on a more aggressive style. There’s also some distinctive guitar riffs and another strong dose of melody. Broken Bones takes on a folk vibe as it bounces along with strong bass line, and Stein giving the most expressive display on the album that reminds me of our own amazing singer/songwriter Carina Round. There’s also a touch of country in the guitar riffs and the song is a strong album highlight.

Wishing Stone has a cinematic feel to it while A Ballad For A Bleeding Hearts offers a deeply contemplative vibe and reminds me of one of Piaf’s classic love ballads. The Night Is Young goes from being vocal-only to dense rock ditty in the space of seconds. I’m reminded of Martha Wainwright as Stein’s voices changes again to reflect the song’s sentiments and vibe. The dark and haunting I’m Not Afraid concludes the album and I immediately ‘play it again Sam,’ (for the umpteenth time). I’m getting seriously excited about seeing this band perform, as you will when you hear this magical album.
