Deadman OUR ETERNAL GHOSTS. One Little Indian

Rarely do I receive an album to review that slips my attention, but this one did. Since ‘re-discovering’ it, I’ve played it many times and with each spin it gets better. Deadman is a US alternative country duo comprising Steven and Sherilyn Collins. The songs are spell-binding and the performances some of the most harmonious I’ve heard. I’m reminded very much of bands like Low and another great US duo, Professor and Maryann.

Opener When The Music’s Not Forgotten is gentle, swaying country song with the most delicate, expressive vocal and sublime melody. The lyrics are beautiful while Sherilyn’s backing vocal is a thing of wonder, and contributes the finishing touch to this very fine and lovely song. Next track Won’t Be Long takes a more soft rock route with Steven’s close-mic, almost whispered vocal dominating. Wonderful support is provided by twinkling piano, brushed drums and the most effective of backing vocals. It’s a contemplative, ghostly and beautiful song. Brother John reveals religious undertones to the duo’s music in a slightly more upbeat song complete with lyrical harmonica and lazily struck drums. Next song Werewolves is a dark, slow song about the evils lurking all around us; “Some monsters are never proven. Not caught, ever moving not still. But beware when you hear the warning.” Extended instrumental moments add drama and depth to a song that is compelling listening. Later in the album a stronger rock vibe emerges, such as in Sad Ole’ Geronimo where the instruments take over the reigns for two extended segments in a deathly, loud grind. Then there’s a slow interlude where Sherilyn takes over lead vocal in Slow Dance accompanied predominantly by a lone piano and wailing country guitar. It’s one of my favourite tracks. Penultimate track Love Will Guide You Home is dedicated to Ray Charles, and represents a rare moment of optimisim on the record.

I love this album’s largely dark and serious ambience. I love the vocals and the meticulous production. And I think this duo is one of the very best around.

4.5/5
