Whiskycats

“That is, by a country mile, the best record I’ve heard in three months doing this show.”– Phill Jupitus on In This Chair

“With brilliantly catchy tunes like Slipped Disco, it’s easy to see how they got this far by themselves…mainstream music may be in a bit of a state, but rest assured; Whiskycats are here to save you.” - Stephen Evans, BBC Manchester Online

“Unarguably the most colourful, flamboyant live act in Manchester.” - David Sue, Manchester Evening News

“On stage, Whiskycats are inciting a near riot with their sultry fresh-fried funk.” – The Stool Pigeon

I’ve just spent half an hour trying to categorise Manchester-based (in)famous five Whiskycats for you. However, an original blend of pop, ska, indie and what they themselves term “gypsy swing” isn’t exactly concise. So, in order to aid with your pigeonholing and dancing needs as we embark upon a new year, the band are releasing Slipped Disco, the first single from their forthcoming debut album, on Monday, March 10th, carrying a tasty remix of Slipped Disco known as “The Whiplash Remix” for any dance-inclined folk to try for size, as well as the wonderful, sprawling B-side and album closer God of the Vacuum.

Whiskycats’ debut single In This Chair and limited early EP releases received attention at radio from a distinguished cast including Phill Jupitus(then of BBC 6Music), Bob Harris (BBC Radio 2) plus Michelle Mullane and Clint Boon (XFM Manchester). Some of you may therefore already be aware of the band from these early endeavours, but for those of you who aren’t, they’re a Manchester-based fivepiece whose main ambition is to make music for people to groove away to in a rather carefree manner, and who’ve already had the pleasure of touring with bands including the Mystery Jets, Arctic Monkeys and The Zutons, allowing them to build and cement their loyal fanbase.

They filled out the legendary Ronnie Scott’s in London amongst many early career highlights including winning the Innocent Talent Search (yes, the people who make the fruit smoothies), playing the Topman Unsigned Stage at last year’s Leeds Festival, and becoming the very first unsigned band to headline the refurbished 1,500-capacity Manchester Academy 1 in the run-up to Christmas. That evening, you could see any kind of dance you could ever imagine on that floor, be it headbanging, the tango, the foxtrot…I think there was even a conga line at one point…

The band’s eponymous debut was recorded with acclaimed producer Jim Spencer (Johnny Marr, New Order) at The Charlatans’ Big Mushroom studios and Clear Studios, Marr’s own studios in Cheshire and is due for release in April 2008. The accompanying promo video was shot by emerging Manchester-based production company, Monster Music Videos, who worked with Jim Noir on the quirky promo for The Key Of C.

Confirmed live dates so far are as follows:

Thursday February 21 The Metro Club, London W1 (media launch)

Saturday February 23 Escobar, Wakefield

Friday February 29 Magnet, Liverpool

Saturday March 1 The Old Swan, Wrexham

Saturday March 8 Joshua Brooks, Manchester

Saturday March 22 Bar 1:22, Huddersfield
