V Festival 2007!

I arrived back at the base camp tent shivering; wondering what pneumonia felt like; and thought about who I should cover in the next hour before the Foo Fighters appeared. I poked my head out of the tent to discover that the rain had returned (it had never really left) and decided I would check through my images rather than stumble around in the mounds of churned-up mud that now dominated the park fields. At last our runner yelled ‘Foo Fighters!’ and we all tumbled out of the cold tent for what Dave Grohl had declared earlier in the day would be a ‘special show.’ He opened the show on his own quietly singing ‘Everlong’ before, predictably, the band joined him to finish the song in true rock style. Great opener! Then came the song that started it all for the ex-Nirvana band member, ‘Monkey Wrench’ from the album THE COLOUR AND THE SHAPE. It met with the biggest singalong of the day and for me was the day’s very special moment. ‘Breakout’ was next up and at its conclusion we all had to vacate the pit. Over two performances at V Grohl and the Foo Fighters had not only dominated the festival but after a long career proved they are still growing, still progressing. While most of the other photographers dashed off to catch Baby Shambles, I hung around at the back of the crowd to hear some more band gems like ‘My Hero<.b>’, ‘Times Like These’, and ‘Up In Arms’ before deciding to leave for the long, muddy trek back to my car. Despite the appalling conditions the day at V had been my best festival day ever with great acts (all of whom seemed to put a bit extra in to make up for the weather), great crowds, and host staff that were supremely professional in very difficult circumstances.
