Sounds Of The City: Lvrpl K! Dave Monks ’Introducing’ came back to The Krazyhouse, Liverpool featuring Killaflaw / Bogdana Chivas / Mojo Revival / Katrina Heenan. Named after a track by legendary bluesman Howlin’ Wolf, Killaflaw inhabit the electronic/rock interzone. They’re from Liverpool, and consist of Benn Helm (vocals, guitar) and Andy Paton (electronics, trumpet). Killaflaw have been likened to a number of other acts – “like Led Zep meet the Chemical Brothers”, “the missing link between Soundgarden and The Prodigy” – but really they have a sound that is uniquely their own. “I’m totally feeling ‘em.” – Liam Howlett The electro-blues band’s first track, ‘Revolution’, won Xfm’s Demo Of The Year award, and then a low-key release of the ‘Set Me On Fire’ single organically spread around the world and topped the DMC charts in the US in 2010. It was played on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6Music, NME Radio, Xfm London and many other independent stations, and the notorious Utah Saints produced a stunning dubsteppy remix of this track. There are now more than 100 home-made YouTube videos that use ‘Set Me On Fire’ as a soundbed – strong indication of its grass roots popularity. Killaflaw have played played at Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Beat Herder, Camden’s Club NME Night at Koko and Club Remix at Proud in London (both twice), Brixton Jamm, Cargo, Notting Hill Arts Club and several of the UK’s O2 Academys and Barflys, as well as several of the main venues in Liverpool. The have also performed showcases on MTV, BBC and Filter Magazine shows. In the summer of 2010 they were joined by former Pendulum and Apollo 440 drummer Paul Kodish for several festival shows, and their latest single ‘Happy Daze’ was released on Westway Records in April 2011. Gigging and recording all the time, Killaflaw produce everything from affecting electronic bangers (‘Broken Idol’, ‘Holy Funk’) to bluesy singalongs (‘Message’) to journeying rocky electronic MTV-friendly anthems (‘Set Me On Fire’, ‘Higher Ground’) to sync-friendly powerhouses (‘Revolution’). As the UK’s DJ magazine said: “Killaflaw have the passion, the soul, the raw power and the tunes. They’re gonna be massive.” * Shake Verdict: By the time Killaflaw roll onto the stage tonight the crowd has become rather sparce, which is a shame because boy did they miss out on one hell of a band that reminds me of a band called The Music who drew from both Led Zep and Chemical Brothers (with beats that roll the house and guitars that rock the dancefloor). They also have a vocal style that’s not out of place with the jingle jangle Liverpool scene of old - click the you tube link above and hear for yourselves. it’s also ironic that two floors up here in the Krazyhouse (K3) there is a full room of people that would simply love this band. It’s testament to them that they play as if they are headling the Echo Arena, they really do give it all and by doing so become one of the best bands I have ever seen in this venue, capping of a great night of music. You missed this and You missed out. Jj Killaflaw: http://www.facebook.com/killaflaw Page: 1 2 |
