Donna Summer & The Four Tops Special

LaDonna Adrian Gaines (born December 31, 1948), known by her stage name, Donna Summer, is an American singer/songwriter who gained prominence during the disco era of the 1970s. Summer is a five time Grammy winner and was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach number one on the US Billboard chart. She also charted four number-one singles in the US within a thirteen-month period and has sold and estimated 130 million albums and singles worldwide.

The Four Tops (often billed by Motown as ‘Four Tops’) are an American vocal quartet, whose repertoire has included doo-wop, jazz, soul music, R&B, disco, adult contemporary, hard rock, and showtunes. Founded in Detroit, Michigan as The Four Aims, lead singer Levi Stubbs (born Levi Stubbles, a cousin of Jackie Wilson and brother of The Falcons’ Joe Stubbs), and groupmates Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Renaldo “Obie” Benson and Lawrence Payton remained together for over four decades, having gone from 1953 until 1997 without a single change in personnel. Among a number of groups who helped define the Motown Sound of the 1960s, including The Miracles, The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas, The Temptations, and The Supremes, the Four Tops were notable for having Stubbs, a baritone, as their lead singer; most groups of the time were fronted by a tenor. The group was the main male vocal group for the songwriting and production team of Holland-Dozier-Holland, who crafted a stream of hit singles, including two Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits: “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There”.

11pm-midnight: The New Regime’s SPEAK THROUGH THE WHITE NOISE In Full…

The New Regime is 22 year-old Ilan Rubin, an American musician, best known for being former drummer of Lostprophets and drummer of industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails during their last tour.

The album is a social commentary on the way the media, entertainment industry, and people in general instill fear and paranoia by exaggerating news and events either for the sake of an agenda or their own entertainment. The album title is a way of counter-broadcasting these themes in the form of an expansive and dynamic album,” Rubin says of his sophomore album, which he wrote, played, sang all parts, and recorded with his brother and manager Aaron Rubin.

Tracks: Clairaudience, Live In Fear, Pray For The Weak, Enjoy The Bitterness, The Skeptic, Radiate The False, State Of Possession, All Laid Out To Rest, The One In Need, For The Taking, What Brings Us Down, The Great Decline.

ANAÏS MITCHELL ‘HADESTOWN’ A Folk Opera

Hadestown is an epic folk opera that sees Anaïs Mitchell joined by a host of guest contributors including Ani Di Franco, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), The Haden Triplets, Greg Brown and Ben Knox Miller of the Low Anthem. Based upon the ancient Greek myth of the poet Orpheus and his doomed quest to rescue his wife Eurydice from the underworld, Hadestown evokes an American depression-era past, the global financial troubles leading into 2010 (though it was written before the stock market collapse), and a post-apocalyptic future.

Anaïs, who sings the part of Eurydice, the character whose (metaphoric) death propels Orpheus into “Hadestown” is joined by a veritable Who’s Who of modern indie folk and rock on the release. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver plays Orpheus; Greg Brown is Hades, Lord of the Underworld (”king of the kingdom of dirt”); Ani DiFranco plays Hades’ strong-willed, subversive wife, Persephone; the Haden Triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya) are the Greek chorus-like Fates and Ben Knox Miller of The Low Anthem is the messenger Hermes. Together, they create a world where people hide behind walls in a misguided attempt to preserve their “freedom” and protect their riches.
