Joe Bonamassa voted ‘Best Overall Guitarist’, ‘Best Blues Guitarist’ in Guitar Player Magazine’s 2010 Reader’s Choice Awards. Bonamassa recently released his critically acclaimed eighth new studio album BLACK ROCK which features the legendary B.B. King on the track “Night Life.” BLACK ROCK entered the UK album chart at number 14 and number 1 in the Independent Album chart. Bonamassa also hosts his own weekly UK radio show on Planet Rock. Don’t miss him when he tours the UK during May 2010… JOE BONAMASSA MAY 2010 UK TOUR DATES Date: Friday 28th May Date: Saturday 29th May Date: Sunday 30th May Date: Monday 31st May Photo: Marty Moffat Biography As Joe Bonamassa grows his reputation as one of the world’s greatest guitar players, he is also evolving into a charismatic blues-rock star and singer-songwriter of stylistic depth and emotional resonance. His ability to connect with live concert audiences is transformational, and his new album, Black Rock, brings that energy to his recorded music more powerfully than ever before. BLACK ROCK is the tenth solo album and eighth studio release of his career - as well as his fifth consecutive with producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes, etc.) - the disc adds an enlivening dose of ‘world’ vibes to Bonamassa’s virtuoso mix of ‘60s-era British blues-rock (à la Beck and Clapton) and roots-influenced Delta sounds. The album was recorded at Black Rock Studios in Santorini, Greece. “With this album, we wanted to explore a ‘world’ feeling, and this was the inspiration behind going to record in Greece and using some of the best Greek musicians to add a little flavor to a couple of the tracks. But it’s by no means a ‘world’ album. We wanted Joe’s usual youthful and energetic tones to play alongside the worldly vibes of the Greek bouzouki and clarino,” said Shirley. Bonamassa adds, “It was the kind of record Kevin and I wanted to make. We needed to rock again a bit like on my first album. It’s youthful, like going back to your childhood.” Throughout, Bonamassa is again backed by the stellar players Carmine Rojas (bass), Anton Fig, Bogie Bowles (both on drums) and Rick Melick (keyboards). 2009 was a big year for Bonamassa. He was awarded the Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award at the U.K.’s prestigious Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards and Classic Rock magazine has said, “They’re calling him the future of blues, but they’re wrong - Joe Bonamassa is the present; so fresh and of his time that he almost defines it.” He was also named Best Blues Guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine’s 2009 Readers’ Choice Awards for the third consecutive year. Guitar Player writer Matt Blackett has said, “He’s an old soul, and that comes through in his bends, vibrato, singing voice, and note choices, which - which each passing year - get more restrained and refined.” Dark Horses Hate Blues… Mummy what’s a DARK HORSE? One thing we know is that it begins with the source…LISA ELLE the exterminating angel, the Swedish sonic siren…How many sailors will deliriously drown mistaking her voice for safe harbour? On her nocturnal dérive’s along the shores of Seagull City, SHE finds such like; FIVE drowned LEATHER boys, shivering under the pier. Nourishing them with spells and drones and words and melodies, she baptizes them DARK HORSES. Next thing we know DARK HORSES are snowed up in Chicago’s Key Club studio’s sharing beds with THE KILLS. In the control room at SLY STONE’s mixing desk proffer’s the mighty Richard FEARLESS (Death In Vegas / Black Acid), recording their debut long player, in the vocal booth KASABIAN’s Tom Meighan adds vocals. The few who’ve heard this record ‘hate BLUES’ (working title) have said: ‘Unaware of their significance, the ‘HORSES high-lonesome sound is psychedelic soul to live not die for.’ ‘Lisa Elle’s voice is a holy communion of Grace Slick and Siouxsie Sioux’ ‘DARK HORSES make mysterious, open-ended songs that tap into spiritual realms and become occasions for our individual meditation.’ Little did KASABIAN’s Serge Pizzorno KNOW that when he pressed PLAY on his Cape Town tour bus cd player to first listen to DARK HORSES that before the song was over he would be surrounded by two armed response team’s, pushing revolver’s in his face demanding him to immediately decease this ‘disturbing clamour’… Next thing we know DARK HORSES are opening for KASABIAN on their ‘West Ryder’ arena tour, including shows at Brixton’s Academy and Wembley’s Empire Pool. Its reasonable to assume that this brand new year will bring DARK HORSES debut long player. It’s beyond doubt that this SPRING the ‘HORSES will ride with the BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB on a tour of the nation. Judas Priest British Steel At 30! “We had no idea we were making anything special,” says Judas Priest guitarist Glenn Tipton of the 1980 album British Steel, now celebrating its 30th anniversary and heralded by millions of fans as a defining moment, not only for the band but for heavy metal as a genre. “After we finished it, we listened back and we knew we liked it, but we couldn’t have anticipated the effect it would have on our careers. Its success shocked us all.” Co-guitarist KK Downing recalls that “the songs felt a bit tighter than anything we had done prior. But we didn’t sit down and say, ‘Right, this is what we need to get on the radio.’ As the saying goes, we were flying by the seat of our pants.” The band (Tipton, Downing, singer Rob Halford, bassist Ian Hill and then-drummer Dave Holland) set up shop at Tittenhurst Park, a Georgian manor house located on 72 acres of land in Sunninghill near Ascot in England. Previously owned by John Lennon, it was then the residence of Ringo Starr. Tipton: “It sounds rather elegant to say, ‘Oh yeah, we recorded where two of The Beatles lived’, but we went there because it was available and we thought, ‘Let’s get out of the same old studios and see what happens.’ “We did what Led Zeppelin had started doing in the early ’70s, putting our amplifiers all over the house and situating the drum kit near the stairwell. Those kind of tricks really did get you some nice sounds.” Containing the radio hits Breaking The Law and Living After Midnight, some diehard Priest fans claimed the band had ‘gone pop,’ but Downing sees the record as “most definitely a metal album. Sure, it does have a more universal appeal than our earlier work. But we were just trying to make something that we liked. If you’d told us that we’d still be talking about British Steel 30 years later, we would’ve thought you were crazy.” As for Tipton, he views British Steel as “that moment where everything was right and nothing went wrong. Between the title, the album cover with the giant razor blade, and the way we were defining our look and sound, all the pieces fell into place. We were damn lucky.” The Alarm Direct Action 2010 Mike Peters and The Alarm released a brand new studio album entitled ‘Direct Action’ in April 2010. ‘Direct Action’ features 14 new recordings for and was released with a unique CD & DVD package which contains brand new performance videos for 11 of the album’s featured tracks and a further two bonus videos for songs that only appear on the DVD. The CD / DVD package will only be available exclusively via www.thealarm.com ‘Direct Action’ is also be available as a download at most online retailers and the download version also features a bonus track unavailable elsewhere. Timed to coincide with the ‘Release The Pressure’ UK Tour (April 2010), ‘Direct Action’ is the first major event in a year, packed with Alarm activity, that sees the band undertake its biggest UK tour for many years, followed by appearances at some of the best music festivals of the summer, commencing with a Sunday June 13th appearance at the legendary ‘Isle Of White’ Festival (on the same day as Paul McCartney). The Alarm will also be appearing at the Levellers’ ‘Beautiful Days’ Festival on the weekend of August 21/22 (Exact day to be confirmed), and also at Ireland’s ‘Electric Picnic’ on September 4th (with PIL and Roxy Music amongst others…). Sessions for ‘Direct Action’ began within the framework of the Alarm’s internet-only ‘Counter Attack Collective’ project that also gave birth to the acclaimed ‘Guerilla Tactics’ album. Once the new album’s opening salvo of ‘Direct Action’ and ‘Release The Pressure’ have sounded, it’s obvious that this album carries on from exactly where Guerilla Tactics left off. Three songs in however, and we begin to hear echoes of earlier Alarm signature themes with Mike Peters’ trademark acoustic coming to the fore on many of the tracks, including the surging ‘Plastic Carrier Bags’ and electro acoustic-blues rocker, ‘CHANGE III.” ‘Direct Action’ also features a unique cover of New York songwriter Willie Nile’s classic ‘One Guitar’ that has a slow burn acoustic intro before exploding to life in classic Alarm fashion. ‘Direct Action’ is lyrically upbeat with strong positive themes throughout. Mike Peters and co. were still recording right up to the last second and although two years in the making, ‘Direct Action’ is as fresh as a record could ever be. The initial recordings for ‘Direct Action’ were embellished last summer with producer Gilby Clarke (Guns N’ Roses) in Los Angeles, California . Gilby Clarke is responsible for the guitar-driven power mix of both Guerilla Tactics and half of ‘Direct Action’. This time around though, Mike Peters decided to mix it up a bit more and cut even more tracks back in Wales, resulting in the title track ‘Direct Action’ itself and the timely ‘Release the Pressure’, which features a special guest appearance from The Beat’s Ranking Roger (Roger helped to write some of the lyrics and provide those distinctive backing vocals). The tracks ‘Control’ and ‘One Guitar’ were added during a final recording session in Wales as was ‘Change III.’ The sound of ‘Direct Action’ is the sound of The Alarm right up to the minute and explores themes of change and the ways in which it impacts on our daily lives. ‘Direct Action’s main tenet is in how to deal with that change and the diverse emotions that it brings out in all of us. Lyrically, it challenges the listener to not be afraid of change but to take positive action or as the title track declares in it’s first verse, ‘To find inspiration where there is none.” Perhaps the lyric that sums up ‘Direct Action’ best can be found in the simple Mike Peters’ acoustic performance of ‘Badge Of Honour’ [Part Two] where he sings “It’s up to us to make a truce, up to us to broker peace, up to us to find the words that will make or break us.” Direct Action was released everywhere on April 12th 2010 Available to order direct from www.thealarm.com Fire in the hole, war coming down Violent Soho Australian Noise!

John Foxx & The Maths Debut 2010 John Foxx & The Maths – ‘Destination’/‘September Town’ Out 24th May 2010 / Short Circuit 2010: John Foxx (100% Analogue Show): Saturday 5 June 2010 + special guests John Foxx & The Maths release their debut single, ‘Destination’/'September Town’ on 24 May, 2010. Recorded at Play Studios in Shoreditch, the single brings together for the first time, John Foxx and analogue synthesizer musician/producer Benge, whose work has been described by Brian Eno as a ‘brilliant contribution to the archeology of electronic music.’ The new single has already picked up support from presenters on Radio 2 and 6Music and media including News of the World and MusicOMH. Benge’s London studio houses one of the biggest collections of analogue synthesizers in the UK and was heavily featured in last autumn’s BBC documentary, Synth Britannia. Gary Numan was also recently filmed at the studio for an interview where he discusses the impact that John Foxx had on his own music. Meanwhile, last year the Roundhouse launched its festival of electronica, Short Circuit, with a line-up including Jeff Mills, Erol Alkan, Holger Czukay (Can), Gavin Bryars and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The first acts of Short Circuit 2010 are now announced: an evening celebrating the best of electronic music, headlined and curated by John Foxx. Following DJ sets by Jori Hulkkonen (best known for his ‘Sunglasses At Night’ hit with Tiga) and Gary Numan with co-producer Ade Fenton, John Foxx will perform a unique analogue synthesizer show to mark his 30th anniversary as a solo artist. The founder of Britain’s first synthesizer rock band Ultravox, released his debut solo album Metamatic in early 1980. This dark electro classic is one of the few albums to be acknowleged by Aphex Twin as an inspiration and is described by the Klaxons as a ‘visionary’ record. Foxx and a one-off group of special guests will assemble on stage for the first time with the machines he used on that album - the Moogs, ARPs and drum machines that created the sound of the future - to perform material from the forthcoming John Foxx & The Maths album (due out in the autumn), at least one new collaboration with Paul Daley from Leftfield and a selection of songs from Metamatic and early Ultravox. Earlier in the day there will be a series of events programmed by Foxx. These will include movies, DJs, VJs, audio-visual work by Ghostbox and his own new collaborations with various film-makers, including a Super 8 project he’s currently working on with London Orbital author, Iain Sinclair. Rolling Stones Exile On Main Street THE ROLLING STONES’ ICONIC EXILE ON MAIN STREET TO BE RELEASED WITH NEVER-BEFORE-HEARD TRACKS Universal Music Group is pleased to announce the re-release of The Rolling Stones’ album Exile on Main Street with an additional 10 never-before-heard tracks. Regarded as one of the greatest albums in rock ‘n’ roll history and one of the most defining of the Stones’ catalogue, Exile will be available May 17, 2010, in the U.K. and May 18, 2010, in the US. Album Launch to Coincide With New Documentary “Stones In Exile” Upon its release more than three decades ago, Exile on Main Street innovatively wove varying musical genres, instruments and even artists into a compelling rhythmic masterpiece. This new compilation features 10 tracks originally recorded during the Exile era and only recently discovered while working on the reissue project. The unearthed tracks which include such titles as “Plundered My Soul,” “Dancing in the Light,” “Following the River” and “Pass The Wine” have undergone a unique evolution, while staying true to the essence of the 1972 album. Alternate versions of “Soul Survivor” and “Loving Cup” also are a part of the Exile bonus materials. As a complement to the release of Exile on Main Street, a documentary, “Stones in Exile,” has just been completed for fans to view on US Network television and through BBC Worldwide internationally. The documentary features rare, never-before-seen archival film, photos and interviews as well as new conversations with the band and the artists they influence. Produced by Oscar -winning filmmaker John Battsek and directed by Stephen Kijak, who is known for award-winning work on Cinemania, and Scott Walker: 30 Century Man, “Stones in Exile” offers an uncommon glimpse into the lives of the band as they created one of the greatest albums of all time. The original 18-track double-album was recorded in various stages at multiple locations, including Olympic Studios in London, Keith Richard’s mansion Nellcote in France, and in Los Angeles where the literal “Main Street” influenced the album title. These atypical circumstances surrounding the recording process greatly affected the album’s outcome which was highly reflective and influenced by the sociopolitical turbulence that marked the late `60s and early `70s. The Stones nixed the influences of a flower-child era and directed their creative process with the edgier, excessive, “more is more” approach of the `70s. Exile reveals a sprawling mix of genres with undertones of blues, country, R&B and gospel mixed with lyrics that fervently demand for release and liberation.
The album pulled together an electric array of talent including Dr. John, the late Billy Preston and pianist Nicky Hopkins. Guitarist Mick Taylor, who replaced Brian Jones in the band shortly before Jones died in 1969, is a magnificent blues player who brought an intensity and elegance to these epic tracks. At times, these musicians and others lived on the recording studio premises with the band creating an extremely open and creative collaboration for the album. “The album’s riveting portrait of artists pushed – by the times, by themselves – to the very limits of their creativity has provided inspiration to every musical generation that has come along since Exile was released in 1972,” said author Anthony DeCurtis. “Every song on Exile on Main Street is elevated by its relationship to the music that comes before and after it. The album’s irresistible power is unlikely to diminish any time soon.” Exile on Main Street will be available in two CD formats: the original 18 track release; a deluxe CD edition with the 10 special bonus tracks; and a super deluxe package that also includes vinyl, a 30- minute documentary DVD with footage from Cocksucker Blues, Ladies and Gentlemen… the Rolling Stones and Stones in Exile, and a 50-page collector’s book with photos from the Exile era. The 10 unreleased tracks were produced by Jimmy Miller, The Glimmer Twins and Don Was.

B.R.M.C. Live Liverpool 2010 ‘Whatever Happened To My Rock ‘N’ Roll’ This is the question I keep asking myself and others over and over again. Where are the great bands, the dark bands, the bands that make you feel like you are their only fan, the bands that just don’t seem to give a fuck about… well anything really? Read more Jeff Berlin High Standards Jazz Halen! Jeff Berlin The Jazz Legend Who Was Asked To Join Van Halen (And Said No) Releases New CD Jeff Berlin is a legend of the electric bass, considered by many to be the finest electric bass player in the world. A true master of the bass, Jeff Berlin has played with the likes of Bill Bruford, George Benson, Allan Holdsworth, and even toured with original members of Yes (Anderson, Wakeman, Bruford, Howe) on only three days’ notice. Much to the anticipation of his fans, Jeff is releasing a new jazz trio CD on his own MAJ Records label titled ‘High Standards’. Along with Berlin on electric bass, the CD also features Woody Herman alumni Richard Drexler on piano and upright bass, and famed drummer Danny Gottlieb (best known for his work with Pat Metheny). “It is a standard jazz piano trio led by a former rock bass player playing jazz tunes, and soloing nothing like bass players usually solo,” says Jeff. “Keith Jarrett is huge influence on me. I transcribed his solos and practiced them on bass. I wanted to try my hand at recording tunes that I have played for many years, which inspired me to record three guys in a room and let the session remain as they eventually turned out.” Jeff Berlin’s resume reads like the who’s who of the higher echelon of music artists. Jeff Berlin was even asked to join Van Halen, an invitation that he actually turned down. “Eddie Van Halen was a fan of the band that I played in with Bill Bruford,” Berlin recalls. “We met and started to hang out and jam together. He was a sweet terrific guy. One day he saw me play a gig with my group and then asked me if I would like to join Van Halen. After this, we rehearsed at David Lee Roth’s house a couple of times. Ultimately, I said no to his gracious offer because when you join a band, you join the entirety of it, the life philosophy of its members and also the habits that they may be involved with. I felt that, in terms of activities and attitudes, I didn’t mesh with their vision of things. I didn’t wish to be mercenary and just take the job for money because it wouldn’t be fair to the band members. So, I just said no to the offer.” Not only is Jeff Berlin a bass phenomenon in the jazz field, but rock players are constantly referring to him as one of their major influences. Jeff was voted Number 1 Jazz Bassist by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine. Carlos Santana called Jeff the “best bassist in the world”, while Rush’s Geddy Lee used the phrase “best bassist on the planet!” Members of Metallica call Jeff the number one bassist on Earth, and Slash considers him a “bass god”. Actor/bass player Gary Sinise, of “Forrest Gump” and “CSI NY” fame called Jeff’s playing “unreal!” Even the late George Carlin was knocked out with Jeff’s playing calling him a “great musician.” Jeff is known as a major innovator through his incisive playing through recordings and performances for the last thirty years. The late legend of bass, Jaco Pastorius regarded Jeff as a better soloist than he was, and Miles Davis’ bassist/producer Marcus Miller told people that he wanted to be the “Black Jeff Berlin”. The founder of The Players School of Music in Clearwater, Florida Jeff started the school when his son got cancer at 5 years old. Jeff retired from playing to stay home with his son, and started The Players School of Music to make a living. (P.S. His son, now 17, was totally cured of the disease.) Jeff has also been at the front of music education for almost 30 years. His column in Guitar Player and Bass Player magazines were the most read columns due to their controversial content of music education. Jeff single handedly has re-vamped music education by dismissing popular methods of learning such as using electronic tuners, metronomes, handgrips, tablature, or any study method that does not include musical content Jeff has released six highly acclaimed solo records, Champion, Pump It!, Taking Notes, In Harmony’s Way, Lumpy Jazz and Aneurythms. The Dean Guitar company builds a Jeff Berlin signature model electric bass, and Markbass amplifers built an amp that so impressed Jeff (who regularly turned down endorsement offers for years) that Jeff only plays through their amps in concert. In support of his new CD release, Jeff will be touring with his band that has featured Danny Gottlieb, Othello Molineaux (the greatest steel drummer in the world), Randy Brecker and Richard Drexler. He also tours with BX3, a bass conglomeration that includes the great bass players Stuart Hamm and Billy Sheehan. “Because instrumental music isn’t popular anymore, not like it used to be, the amount of people interested in hearing players play simply to enjoy the music is less than it was in the past,” Jeff explains. “This is an era where you will never hear another Jimi Hendrix, because, in a great part, the music industry won’t allow it. This contempory music era is not interested in allowing a great player be hear or promoted. For this reason I jokingly refer about my shows that when I play, ‘The Audient will always be on his foot!’ and also regarding my CD, if Michael Jackson’s CD’s always went “Platinum”, my CD will surely go “Spackle!” Jeff Berlin’s playing continues to influence a new generation of bass players. His teaching continues to inspire and advance players wishing to know about the language of their art. Jeff Berlin is a Master. ‘High Standards’ is available on CD Baby, Amazon, iTunes and other online retailers.
