Korn III Remember Who You Are Roadrunner Records announced the worldwide signing of multi-platinum, genre-defining hard rock band Korn. Korn III – Remember Who You Are is the band’s ninth album overall and their first album for their new label. It was produced by Ross Robinson, who also manned the boards for the band’s explosively definitive self-titled 1994 debut, as well as the follow up, 1996’s Life is Peachy. Bursting onto and instantly dominating the hard rock scene in 1994, Korn have proven to be one of the pre-eminent bands in the world, as well as one of the most influential and significant bands on the hard rock musical landscape for the past two decades. “We called this record Korn III — Remember Who You Are because it really feels like a return to that attitude we had on the first two records,” bassist Fieldy said. “And when it came to putting this record out, we could not think of anyone better to help us than Roadrunner, the only label that even understands rock music anymore.” Fieldy also checked in from the band’s current tour, taking time to greet fans while the band was trekking around the snowy Alaskan terrain. Over the course of eight releases, Korn have sold over 30 million albums worldwide, inspiring a disciple-like devotion among their fanbase along the way. Korn also notched six Grammy nominations and have won two; one for Best Short Form Music Video for “Freak on a Leash” from 1998’s Follow the Leader, as well as one for Best Metal Performance for “Here to Stay” from 2002’s Untouchables. They have also been nominated for nine MTV VMAs, having picked up two wins for “Best Rock Video” and “Best Editing” for “Freak on a Leash.” Korn also launched their own massively successful touring festival, “The Family Values Tour.” It’s beyond evident that Korn are one of a kind and have secured a firm place in the history of rock ‘n’ roll, thanks to their signature blend of twisted, throbbing guitar riffs, syncopated chaotic funk beats, a schizophrenic bass thump and an unmistakable cathartic howl. Korn’s current lineup is Jonathan Davis (vocals), Fieldy (bass), James “Munky” Shaffer (guitar) and Ray Luzier (drums). Korn III – Remember Who You Are retains that savage, raw energy that made Korn such a crucial fixture to an entire generation of diehard fans. The band will spend the summer headlining the third annual Rock Star Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. They will also embark on a South American run, as well as headlining the Jagermeister Music Tour in America beforehand. ALBUM OUT SUMMER 2010
ToTo Tee’s 4 You - Direct! Toto makes it easy for bands to sell their merchandise online. Just use our state-of-the-art web interface to upload your designs and choose which products to sell, embed your shop wherever you like, then we do the rest –production, payment and postage. With Toto, you set the selling price by deciding how much profit you want to make on top of the basic price of printing the t-shirt. We pay you your total profit at the end of each month. Toto t-shirts are printed with a brand new technology called Direct-To-Garment printing (DTG), which makes it economical to print one-off designs. This means that the t-shirt is especially printed once it’s been ordered, making it possible for us to offer a huge range of designs, sizes and colours – without ever going out of stock. Toto allows your fans to buy with peace of mind as we offer security and customer service that a band never could on their own – and frees you up to keep making great music!
Toto was set up by Rob, Peter and Alan, with help from our friends Nicky Gibson and Peter Bowyer. From years of both being in bands ourselves and working within the music industry, we know how important merchandise is for bands to get their name out there and generate some much-needed cash. But we also know how hard it can be to get sorted: shelling out for a minimum print run, gambling on how many of each size to print, setting up an online shop, taking payment, going to the post office with the orders…which is probably why so many bands never get around to doing it. When we found out about a new printing technology called Direct-to-Garment (DTG) which meant even one-off prints could be cost-effective, we saw an opportunity to really help bands out. By allowing bands to design their t-shirts online and choose their own selling price, we could handle all the fiddly production, payment and postage – and because each t-shirt isn’t printed until it’s ordered, no-one has to worry about holding lots of stock which might never sell. The idea was honed and the site was built, and Toto is the result. We think it’s a great tool for bands to promote themselves and make some money with minimal effort, and we hope you do too. There are still only three of us dealing with every aspect of running Toto, from meetings with suppliers to dealing with returns to building cool new features, but we all absolutely love doing it and do everything we can to keep our bands and customers happy. Please feel free to contact us with any suggestions, ideas or concerns – or just to let us know how Toto is working out for you. We can’t wait to hear from you!
TSO Trans-Siberian Orchestra It’s been 14 years since Trans-Siberian Orchestra debuted with the single “Christmas Eve (Sarajevo/1224),” inspiring generations of fans to rediscover the multi-dimensional art form of the rock opera. TSO has sold more than seven million copies of its first four rock operas — 1996’s CHRISTMAS EVE & OTHER STORIES, 1998’s THE CHRISTMAS ATTIC, BEETHOVEN’S LAST NIGHT in 2000 and 2004’s THE LOST CHRISTMAS EVE. On the road, meanwhile, they have become one of the world’s top touring acts, with a $20 million-plus production that by 2008 played to over 5 million people in 80+ cities, selling more than $230 million worth of tickets. And, oh yeah, there was that crazy beer ad with the insanely decorated Christmas house whose lights were synced to TSO’s “Wizards in Winter.” Now TSO is taking us to a bold and exciting new place - NIGHT CASTLE. “Our fans have been unbelievably patient,” TSO founder, producer and writer Paul O’Neill says — and that’s an understatement. O’Neill and company began working on NIGHT CASTLE in 2005, after all, and every year since he’s found himself answering questions about when it would be finished. “It definitely got out of control,” O’Neill says with a laugh. TSO even released the NIGHT CASTLE track “Night Enchanted” via Amazon.com in 2008 just to show fans that new music really was being created. But the wait was worth it. A sweeping two-disc set whose 26 songs embrace hard rock theatrics, classical majesty, operatic beauty and chorale richness, NIGHT CASTLE is TSO’s ultimate creative statement, a transcendent and enveloping experience built upon a gripping story with a resonant and timely message. As with its predecessors, the characters and narrative are sharply drawn and woven into the genre-splicing soundscape, conveying a wide gamut of emotions right up until the final twist at the tale’s end. “I’ve always believed that music has the power to transport,” O’Neill explains. “The original concept of Trans-Siberian Orchestra was how to make music have the most emotional impact. We always try to write melodies so they’re so infectious they don’t need lyrics and lyrics so poetic and cutting they’ll stand up in poetry books, but when you hear the two together you create an alloy where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole and you cannot imagine them apart.” “I just always want to find a way to make the music more engaging and have a deeper emotional impact.” NIGHT CASTLE also merges O’Neill’s high-minded musical ambitions with his keen interest in history, a tale that begins with a chance encounter between a seven-year-old girl and a mysterious stranger from New York City on a beach in California. It’s a tale that weaves together light and dark, virtue and fear…and whose details are best revealed by listening to the album itself. “It’s all about redemption and how even good people can make mistakes in life, and it’s never too late to change them,” O’Neill explains. “It’s an album about good and evil and the opportunities you have in life to choose between them. When I was a kid, I used to believe everyone was basically good and, given the opportunity, we basically do the right thing. Then you get a little older and you’re like, ‘Wow, there are some people doing some really bad things out there.’ But there’s still a belief that in the end, good always wins, that your life’s path is not pre-destined, you can always choose. And that gives us hope.” There was plenty of help in the laboratory, of course. On NIGHT CASTLE, O’Neill gathered his core alchemists — Jon Oliva, Bob Kinkel, Al Pitrelli and engineering wiz Dave Wittman - along with other TSO stalwarts such as: guitarists Chris Caffery, Alex Skolnick, Angus Clark and bassist Johnny Lee Middleton; keyboardists Jane Mangini and Derek Wieland; drummers Jeff Plate and John O. Reilly; and a vocal armada including solos by Rob Evan, Jay Pierce, Tim Hockenberry, Jennifer Cella, Alexa Goddard, Valentina Porter and Jeff Scott Soto (of Journey and Yngwie Malmsteen fame). NIGHT CASTLE’S 68-page booklet, meanwhile, features the artwork of Greg Hildebrandt, who O’Neill notes has “become as much a member of Trans-Siberian Orchestra as any of the musicians.” Theory Of A Deadman/Scars Live Tyler Connolly - lead vocals / guitar Dean Back - bass David Brenner - guitar Theory of a Deadman had a simple but daunting goal for its third album: to make the greatest record possible. “I always try to remind the guys and myself that there are twenty bands lined up behind us just waiting for a chance to take our place” says frontman Tyler Connolly, “so that means we had to go in there and make a great record.” With Scars & Souvenirs, the Vancouver trio has hit the mark. The balanced 13-track effort is the polished and passionate testament to seven years of hard work, heavy touring and diligent attention to its craft. From the swirling grind of “By the Way” to the nasty snarl of “Crutch” to the soaring melody of “Not Meant to Be” and “Wait For Me,” Scars And Souvenirs is a broad-reaching endeavour that puts Connolly, guitarist Dave Brenner and bassist Dean Back back in the rock pantheon, achieving creative growth without sacrificing the hard-hitting power that got them here in the first place. “We really dug hard on this one,” Connolly notes. “The longer you’re in a band, the more you write songs, the better you get. We’ve had such a great opportunity to figure out what to do better, how to write a better song and keep building and building. That’s exciting for us.” Scars & Souvenirs began taking shape in February 2007, as Theory was winding down from touring to support their second album, 2005’s Gasoline, a slump-defying second outing that launched the US hits “No Surprise,” “Say Goodbye,” “Santa Monica” and “Hello Lonely (Walk Away From This).” The group returned to Grammy-nominated producer Howard Benson, who in turn issued marching orders that set the tone for the project. “Before we even went into the studio, Howard wanted to gear this record up to sound huge,” Connolly recalls about Benson’s “all killer, no filler” approach to the record. “He said, ‘You have to go into a record with great songs. You can’t make them while you’re there. You can’t just go in with one or two great songs. You’ve got to have 10.’ So we just kept sending him songs until we had the 10 to 12 great ones and then he said, ‘OK, let’s go.’” Theory actually brought about 17 songs to Los Angeles’ Bay 7 studios in August 2007. Amidst low-key hijinks — Brenner and Back grew moustaches, Connolly sported a fake one in the name of band unity — the group and studio drummer Robin Diaz recorded 15 before choosing the 12 that ultimately comprise Scars & Souvenirs, which proved an apt title for the range of emotions Connolly sings about on the album. “It’s the scars and souvenirs of your life,” he explains. “The songwriting on the record is really about someone’s past or and present, their relationships and how they shape everything. It’s more metaphorical than physical scars and trophies. And while Connolly has certainly done his turn as a rock ‘n’ roll king of pain on Gasoline and 2002’s attention-catching eponymous debut, he went into Scars & Souvenirs determined to show he could be more than the “callous bastard” Rolling Stone magazine called him in an early profile. Here, Connolly explores broad new lyrical terrain, indicative of his growth as a person and as songwriter. “For a while there, every song was, ‘Get the fuck out! I don’t need women! Screw them!’ That’s kinda how I felt at that point,” Connolly says with a self-effacing laugh. “But I’ve grown as a songwriter and as a person. I wanted to write some different, nicer songs for a change.” He didn’t have to look hard for inspiration. He wrote “Wait For Me,” with its acoustic guitar underpinning and rich chorus, for his wife, paying tribute to her fortitude in being home alone while he’s on the road. The piano-laden “All or Nothing,” meanwhile, chronicles their relationship, which began as a good friendship before blossoming into romance. “It was kind of sick of me writing all these woman-hater songs before,” acknowledges Connolly, whose mother left his family when he was in high school, providing rich source material for his earlier work. “People thought I was writing about my wife.” While Connolly’s lyrics have taken on a kinder, gentler pallor on Scars & Souvenirs, the band continues to keep the knobs cranked to 11. Connolly also went into Scars And Souvenirs trying to write some songs that were “just for fun,” and succeeded with tracks such as “End of Summer,” an anthem about the bittersweetness of endings, whether that of a season or a relationship. But even though the album mines a deeper emotional trough, it charges with the same potent force of its predecessors. When fans eagerly crank up the likes of “So Happy,” “Got it Made” and “Bad Girlfriend,” they’ll end up with a set of blown out speakers, thanks to the firepower that crackles in these rockers, while “Sacrifice” bristles with the kind of primal, super-charged defiance that has long defined the best hard rock “A lot of bands, they grow older and they get greyer and they just can’t do the rock songs anymore,” Connolly says. “I don’t see that happening to us. Fans are gonna hear our record and hear some softer stuff, but we’re a rock band. I think it sounds bigger than the other two (albums) we’ve done. Which is, not surprisingly, why Connolly, Brenner and Back are chomping at the bit to take Scars And Souvenirs out on the road. “We really want to take the band further this time,” Connolly says. “We want to get out there to places we have not been before - where a lot of our fans are –Asia, Australia, as well as reaching our fans in North America and Europe. We’re just a hard-working band, man. We want to be out there for a couple of years and play these songs to everybody we possibly can.” With an album like Scars & Souvenirs, the fans will be lining up to listen.
Polly Mackey & The Pleasure Principle Website: http://www.theplayground.co.uk The Liverpool & North Wales based band is making their second appearance at SXSW after a 9-performance debut at last year’s festival which earned them rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. Already booked in for seven performances this year – four of which are official SXSW showcases – the band are being touted as one of 2010’s major breakthrough acts. Leading UK media group HMV certainly seem to think so. They recently selected the band as the only unsigned act to be invited to appear at their inaugural Next Big Thing Festival in London in February where they rubbed shoulders with the likes of The Plasticines, Paloma Faith, Miike Snow, Daisy Dares You and the Mystery Jets. Despite her tender age, Polly is no stranger to big stages having appeared at last summer’s FIB Heineken Benicassim Festival in Spain alongside Oasis, Kings of Leon and The Killers. Does the prospect of appearing in front of more than two hundred music industry executives from around the world faze her? Polly answers: “If I’m honest, I would have to say that I’d feel more comfortable if it was a full band performance rather than a stripped down acoustic one because you’re obviously a bit more exposed. But you couldn’t ask for a better shop window to display your goods which are the bare songs. Hopefully, these will shine through and we can do enough to convince the suits to come along later on the same night to our official showcase at The Alehouse where they can discover what we are really all about”.
Trigger The Bloodshed New LP/Tour TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED: NEW ALBUM, UK + IRISH TOUR!!! Breathing fresh air into the lungs of the UK death metal scene, Bath-based youngsters TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED (Jonny Burgan – Vocals / Rob Purnell - Lead Guitar / Martyn Evans – Guitar / Dan Wilding – Drums / Dave Purnell – Bass) have certainly been making a name for themselves, having played with the biggest names in metal in the last couple of years, and had unrivalled support from metal magazines around the world, including being nominated as Best Underground Band at 2008’s Metal Hammer Awards, and Best New Band in 2009’s, and having their first magazine cover courtesy of Terrorizer. After Purgation and The Great Depression, the band release their third album in May. Entitled Degenerate, it was recorded at the start of 2010 and co-produced by the band and their regular producer Mark Daghorn (Orange Goblin/Cradle Of Filth), with Jacob Hansen (Aborted/Hatesphere/Volbeat) mixing. “It’s based upon the younger generations of the world, and how collectively as ‘youths’ and ‘young adults’ we are often discriminated against as troublemakers and the ones without futures,” explains vocalist Jonny Burgan. “Because the higher social order in control of the world are afraid of being overthrown and superseded by the younger generation, and so subtlety are corrupting the youth to neutralize this threat of revolution. Musically a lot more focus has been put into the song writing and coming up with riffs instead of ‘puzzles’ - as someone once put it - but without losing the technicality and aggressiveness we love. Ultimately this album is going to be the perfect mix of groove and hostility!” LIVE DATES (with BLEED FROM WITHIN + THE DEAD LAY WAITING) TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED release their new album, DEGENERATE, on MAY 17TH. THE DEAD LAY WAITING’s debut album, WE RISE, is out now, and BLEED FROM WITHIN’s new album, EMPIRE, is released on MAY 10TH, all three albums are on Rising Records and distributed by Plastic Head
Audio Bullys Higher Than The Eiffel NEW ALBUM HIGHER THAN THE EIFFEL (BULLYCD1) – 29TH MARCH Drums (On With The Story) – Only Man – Daisy Chains – Feel Alright – Twist Me Up – Dynamite – Drained Out – London Dreamer – The Future Belongs To Us – Shotgun – Dragging Me Down – Smiling Faces – Kiss The Sky – Goodbye Audio Bullys return with a new album on 29th March. ‘Higher Than The Eiffel’ follows a four year gap since the pair’s second album, ‘Generation’ and sees Simon Franks and Tom Dinsdale recapture the energy and dancefloor instincts that made Audio Bullys one of the most successful UK dance acts of the previous decade. Mixing their love of house and breaks with an expansive cast list of musical collaborators, switching across dance’s myriad genres and throwing away the rule book has led Audio Bullys to make their finest record to date, a worthy successor to breakthrough debut ‘Ego War’ and follow up ‘Generation’, which spawned the massive worldwide hit, ‘Shot You Down’. Audio Bullys make no secret of the fact that the long gap between ‘Generation’ and ‘Higher Than The Eiffel’ was in part down to that massive success. Having lost their way following the release of ‘Generation’, ‘Higher Than The Eiffel’ sees the pair return to top form after a few false starts. Recorded in a six month burst through 2009 and made with the express intent of creating an album for their mates rather than a record company, to be ‘respected by the people that you want to respect you’ as Si puts it, the fourteen tracks range from the full on club stomp of lead single, ‘Only Man’ and rave anthemics of recent free download ‘Kiss The Sky’, to the psychedelic come down of ‘Daisy Chains’, the Chic guitar disco of ‘Dynamite’ and the ska stylings of ‘Goodbye’. The bangers are still here but this is a complete album, a journey through various dance musics, all held together by Si’s conversational lyrics and the little production twists and turns that are the hallmark of Audio Bullys sound. Recorded and produced by the band with help from a cast of friends including Suggs and Mike Barson of Madness, Charlie Creed Miles and Si’s brother Jimmy, ‘Higher Than The Eiffel’ is released on the band’s own Face Piece imprint via Cooking Vinyl on 29th March 2010. www.cookingvinyl.com / www.audiobullys.com / www.myspace.com/audiobullys
