Hansard & Irglova Nominated for an Oscar and Grammy

It’s surprising to me that a small independent online music magazine like Shakenstir can spot great talent and songs that other (hugely resourced) UK media so blatantly miss. Since the late 90’s we’ve closely followed the career of Glen Hansard and his band the Frames after being blown away by the 1999 album DANCE THE DEVIL. Record label debacles and media ambivalence dogged the band and prevented it’s popular progress here in the UK, while at home in Ireland quite the opposite was happening. This led the Frames and Hansard in solo guise to take their music to a wider international audience through extensive tours in Eastern Europe, the USA and Australia.

Amazing Tunes

We want to make the music industry fair for musicians and for their fans. You could call it fair trade for the music industry, and we often do, but we’ve never felt the need to do a Chris Martin and write it all over our hands: the people who work for us do the talking.

R.E.M. To ‘Accelerate’

R.E.M. has announced that the 14th studio album of their impressive career will be released April 1 via Warner Bros. The new effort, entitled Accelerate, was recorded in 2007 with producer Jacknife Lee, and is allegedly their most uptempo record to date, perhaps in reaction to the critical shrug over 2004’s more plodding Around The Sun. This time around, the band tested their material to fans, posting working rehearsals of their songs in a five-night residency at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin. Those shows in became the ‘Live’ album that was released in 2007.

The Storys TOWN BEYOND THE TREES. Hall Recordings

This Welsh band’s debut album featured a couple of songs that were quite special and hinted at a band capable of filling the gap left by classic American mid-west rockers like the Eagles. The recent album releases (after an absence of 28 years) from the Eagles and Robert Plant and Alison Krauss suggests that there is a huge untapped demand for this genre of music. It’s in this music territory that The Storys have chosen to park their talents. So, the big question is can this band meet and beat the best?
