Stars IN OUR BEDROOM AFTER THE WAR. City Slang From the album’s title you’d be forgiven for thinking that this is a dark, serious collection of songs. You’d only be partially right, and as for me I’m a little confused… Read more
The Proclaimers LIFE WITH YOU. W14 Music I missed the guys at the V Festival but could hear the old favourites ringing out across the fields on Sunday at Weston Park. But I did witness a performance a couple of years ago right here in Wrexham and enjoyed the experience. This brand new album is highly enjoyable and reveals brothers that are so enthusiastic about what they do, it’s infectious. Read more
Richard Hawley LADY’S BRIDGE. Mute Hawley has received an amazing amount of reverential airwave and print publicity in recent months, including a few acoustic radio sessions which have been disappointing. I wonder why… Read more
Soho Dolls RIBBED MUSIC FOR THE NUMB GENERATION. A&G I saw the Dolls perform last year and, despite lead vocalist Maya not appearing topless with gaffer-taped ‘bits’, I really enjoyed the show. This is the debut album and doesn’t disappoint with its loud, rhythmic, electro sounds. Read more
Broken Social Scene Presents: Kevin Drew SPIRIT IF… They say, ‘life wasn’t meant to be easy,’ and for the music reviewer is can be nigh on impossible. Take this album for example, it’s got heritage and quality writ large all over it, but can I understand it…? But I do actually like it a lot…so what is one to say? Read more
Editors AN END HAS A START. Sony BMG This is the band’s second album and has met with some pretty mixed reviews, with the main complaint being its contemplative, dark ambience. It really puzzles me that a serious but highly accessible album hasn’t met with unanimous acclaim… Read more

Eisley COMBINATIONS. Reprise/Ryko It was around twelve months ago that I first came across this Texan five-piece band and I remember the occasion well. It was at Liverpool University’s large Academy venue where the band was main support to Taking Back Sunday. I was struck by the band’s songs, and quite intense, emotional performance. The band is made up of very attractive sisters Stacy, Sherri and Chauntelle DuPree, brother Weston and cousin Garron. COMBINATIONS is the band’s second album and my first opportunity to hear their studio sound. Read more
Jamie Cullum IN THE MIND OF (Compilation). District 6 I can imagine that this record will be the start of series of ‘IN THE MIND OFs’ and it’s a fascinating prospect on the strength of Jamie Cullum’s interesting selection of favourite songs. Read more
Kate Nash MADE OF BRICKS. Fiction I’m not sure what I was expecting when I went to see Kate Nash perform in Liverpool a few months back. But I came away impressed by a surprisingly powerful voice, stage savvy, musical originality, and songs I found instantly likeable. Most, if not all, the songs performed (I now realise) were from this debut album, and I still find them entertaining. Read more
