Wooden Wand JAMES & THE QUIET. Ectstatic Peace I love American contemporary folk music but there’s been too few great new records released over the past few years. Ryan Adams, Josh Rouse and the late, lamented Rainer are some of the best albums I’ve heard, that is until this little beauty arrived through my door. Recorded on Thurston Moor’s Ectstatic Peace label (and produced by Lee Ranaldo) James Jackson Toth, aka Wooden Wand, has produced a minor contemporary folk classic. Read more

Smashing Pumpkins ZEITGEIST. Martha’s Music/Reprise ZEITGEIST is the band’s sixth album, and the first new material since 2000’s MACHINA/THE MACHINES OF GOD. The album was produced by Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin with Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Dale working separately on various tracks. ZEITGEIST took two years to complete and it shows. It’s a dark and ambitious heavy rock album, and certainly up there with the band’s best. Read more
Queens Of The Stone Age. Era Vulgaris. Interscope I’ve lost count on how many side projects Josh Homme has been involved in but do know that this is the Queen’s fourth studio album, and in my view its best. Read more
Bat For Lashes FUR AND GOLD. Echo The Nationwide Mercury Prize short-list for album of the year has now been published and includes this debut album by Bat For Lashes aka Natasha Khan. The album has garnered significant acclaim including, “Nothing short of breathtaking” from The Observer, and “One of the most stupendous, haunting debuts in ages” from The Sunday Times. I had not heard the album and so quickly obtained it to see for myself. Khan is described (amongst other things) as a visual artist, and it is this which really features on her debut album. Read more
