Wooden Wand JAMES & THE QUIET. Ectstatic Peace

I love American contemporary folk music but there’s been too few great new records released over the past few years. Ryan Adams, Josh Rouse and the late, lamented Rainer are some of the best albums I’ve heard, that is until this little beauty arrived through my door. Recorded on Thurston Moor’s Ectstatic Peace label (and produced by Lee Ranaldo) James Jackson Toth, aka Wooden Wand, has produced a minor contemporary folk classic.

The Beasts Of Bourbon LITTLE ANIMALS. Albert Productions

The PR blurb goes something like this: “Legendary Australian rockers The Beasts Of Bourbon release their first ever UK album of new songs on July 30. Entitled LITTLE ANIMALS it was recorded and mixed in just three days. And it will KICK YOUR ARSE.” And it friggin’ well does!

It’s a dark and ambitious heavy rock album, and certainly up there with the band’s best.

Bat For Lashes FUR AND GOLD. Echo

The Nationwide Mercury Prize short-list for album of the year has now been published and includes this debut album by Bat For Lashes aka Natasha Khan. The album has garnered significant acclaim including, “Nothing short of breathtaking” from The Observer, and “One of the most stupendous, haunting debuts in ages” from The Sunday Times. I had not heard the album and so quickly obtained it to see for myself. Khan is described (amongst other things) as a visual artist, and it is this which really features on her debut album.
