INSTANT KARMA The Amnesty International Campaign To SAVE DARFUR. WB

The Conflict in Darfur, Sudan, has led to some of the worst human rights abuses imaginable, including systematic and widespread murder, rape, abduction and displacement. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been killed by deliberate and indiscriminate attacks, and over 2.5 million civilians have been displaced. Help Amnesty International end the atrocities.” www.amnesty.org/noise

Lisa Lindley-Jones WHITE SHADOW E.P. Eye Industries

A couple of years ago we received the Martha Wainwright E.P. which blew us away; we couldn’t wait to see her perform and hear the full album release. Well, another tantalising E.P. has landed featuring a young lady called Lisa Lindley-Jones. We’re waiting…

Tom McRae KING OF CARDS. V2

Now here’s a UK singer/songwriter who deserves to sell many more records than he does. Anybody who has seen the guy in concert knows what a formidable performer he is, while his studio work is consistently excellent, if not inspiring. This is his latest album, and one that will be lapped up by his fans, and should be by anyone who appreciates the very bestcontemporary music.

ONCE, Music From The Motion Picture. Sony BMG

Pretty soon now a dramatic film will hit our cinemas here in the UK that you simply must see. It’s an independent Irish movie called ONCE which recently triumphed at 2007’s Sundance Festival, winning the Audience Prize. The Chicago Tribune proclaimed it, “…the best music film of our generation.” And if you are the slightest bit sceptical then this soundtrack should convince you.

Spider-Man 3 MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY. Sony

Do I go to movies? Well, no. There’s little point with me because when the cinema lights go down and the credits start to roll, I’m off into the deepest sleep. I went to see the same film three times once (it was Fletch) and managed the first ten minutes before my head fell onto the shoulder of the hapless lady sitting next to me. So, for new movies, I’m pretty well stuck with the film’s soundtrack to get a flavour of what’s goin’ on.

The Concretes HEY TROUBLE. Licking Fingers

Following a turbulent period, including the departure of the band’s lead singer, The Concretes have got their act together (literally) to create a third album. Taking over vocal duties is the band’s drummer Lisa Milberg, and by composing songs based around her vocal capabilities the band has produced a likeable but unremarkable album.

Keren Ann KEREN ANN. Delabel/EMI

I thought I knew every great singer/songwriter out there, and especially those who are on their umpteenth album, so how come this lady has slipped my net? Lack of hype or poor PR, whatever the reason I’m more than pleased that I’ve made her acquaintance now because, as this album proves, she’s one special artist.

Suzanne Vega BEAUTY & CRIME. EMI

I’m a fan of articulate and melodic singer/songwriters, but I also prefer those who spend their time in the dark shade rather than bright sunlight. Perhaps that’s why I’ve never quite taken to the softer, lighter tones of Suzanne Vega. Could her new album force me to see the light? Well, almost…
