Elbow LEADERS OF A FREE WORLD. MAG/V2

Oh dear, oh dear! This is yet another album that puts Coldplay’s newest in the dim, dark shade. But it’s not altogether surprising since Elbow has proved to be one of the UK’s top bands through tremendous live performances, and two other very strong albums. This is a band that moves on and up, and this album is another example of that musical progression.

The Best UK Live Performances of 2005

I welcome the winter season for a single reason; trees lose their leaves to expose their true diversity, character and beauty. And it’s for similar reasons that we go out of our way to attend a select range of live performances. They provide the final proof of an act’s true quality and nature. Our gig selection process usually starts when we receive albums to review.

Cayto !BLUNDERBUSS! Rictus

I have to admit that I’ve had this on my little pile of promos for a few weeks. Many months ago I also received a sort of ‘taster’ CD which didn’t impress, hence my reluctance to play the band’s second album. The Best Albums of 2005

2005 will go down in our book as the year of sharp contrasts, with a vast number of overrated and over-hyped albums (Coldplay included), sitting uncomfortably alongside some of the best releases in recent times. As usual, our selection of Best Albums of 2005 is as diverse as it is fantastic, and we would plead with you to ignore the swelling tide of seasonal compilations and go for any one of the following albums. The top twenty Best Albums of 2005 are without doubt some of the best albums released in recent years. In addition, the acts responsible for them are stunning and highly involving live performers – they are the double-headed coins of the music market.

Eileen Rose COME THE STORM. Banana Recordings

I’ve now witnessed Eileen Rose perform on several occasions, and each time I’ve come away with a warm felling, knowing I’ve seen real talent at work. Her last album LONG SHOT NOVEENA was wonderful and featured in our selection of best albums about three years ago. This new album has been a long time coming, but it was worth the wait.

Lizz Wright DREAMING WIDE AWAKE. Verve

A couple of months ago I was watching Jools Holland’s Later TV show, when, as so often happens on this programme now, one act caught my attention. American Lizz Wright performed (criminally) just one song during yet another mediocre show. This young lady’s voice blew me away and I quickly set out to find out more about her and her newest album. Eventually I had to resort to my friend Mr Ebay to obtain the CD, and it confirmed that this young lady is quite special.
