Kate Rogers ST. EUSTACIA. Grand Central. This is an example of how international music is truly becoming. Kate Rogers is Canadian but she records with quintessential Manchester urban label, Grand Central. I understand that this is partially due to Rogers providing vocal services in the past to the label. Last week I had the pleasure of seeing her perform live in Manchester in front of an enthusiastic audience. Impressed but not totally convinced, I looked forward to hearing this, her debut UK album. The Vines WINNING DAYS. Heavenly. After contributing playlists for the past month to our local Wrexham FM radio station, I realised that I had not played any of the most current or recent ‘buzz bands’. In circumstances where I was free to play anything I wished (as long as it didn’t include the F word), I was able to find amazing past and present music from my collection that I felt truly deserved airplay. The Vines wasn’t amongst my list on the basis of their last album. Perhaps things could have been different with this new one… Read more
Cypress Hill TILL DEATH DO US PART. Colombia. Cypress Hill is one of my favourite hip-hop groups, and consistently produce great records. This one is no exception, and may well be the best. Read more
John Frusciante SHADOWS COLLIDE WITH PEOPLE. Warner After Frusciante’s last wonderful album, TO RECORD ONLY WATER FOR TEN DAYS, I was expecting fireworks from this one. Sure enough there are some crackers but there are also an awful lot of damp squids. Frusciante is of course guitarist of one of the world’s biggest bands, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and this is no less than his fourth solo outing. Read more

Eric Clapton ME AND MR JOHNSON. Reprise I have little doubt that this was the album that Clapton has wanted to make for some time. Credit is due to Reprise to facilitate the record’s making despite its likely limited sales appeal. I also suspect it’s been lying around for a while waiting to be released but that’s another story… Read more
Brass Monkey FLAME OF FIRE. Topic
Old English folk music has gone through something of a popular resurgence in recent years helped by the success of artists like Kate Rusby, Cara Dillon and Liza Carthy. Brass Monkey is a band made up of some venerable bad boys in the form of Martin Carthy (guitar, mandolin, five-string banjo, vocals), Roger WilliamsJohn Kirkpatrick (button accordion, anglo concertinas, and vocals), Martin Brinsford (drums, tambourine, cymbal, shaker, berimbau, reco reco, mouth-organs, saxophone), and Howard Evans (trumpets and flugelhorne). Proving there’s life in the old dog yet, these guys fairly blast their way through ancient tracks like the opening, rollicking The Swinton May Song. Now while this type of music leaves me cold I have to admit that my feet were tapping uncontrollably while listening to this particular track. Carthy is in excellent voice while the proliferation of instruments (many of which I have never heard of before) are played with amazing gusto. Read more
